1ST APPEARANCE: ROBOTECH: BOOBYTRAP

The ship that became known as the SDF-1 was made the ROBOTECH MASTERS with help from a scientist named ZOR. ZOR disliked the MASTERS and betrayed them. He sent the ship to the other end of the galaxy. Inside was a vast supply of PROTOCULTURE.
The ship crashed on Earth in 1999. It landed on a deserted island in the Pacific Ocean. It's landing ended a Global Civil War and united the entire planet. For the next ten years, the SDF-1, as it was called, was explored, studied and rebuilt by scientists and engineers. It was finally finished in 2009 and placed under the command of CAPTAIN GLOVAL. It was to be the planet's ultimate weapon against invasion.
Inaugration Day was plagued by disaster. First, the ZENTRADI arrived looking for the ship. Following a preprogrammed command, the SDF fired its MAIN GUN, destroying two vessels. Second, the ship's antigravity generators tore right through the bulkheads. Finally, to avoid the enemy fleet, CAPTAIN GLOVAL ordered a fold manuever in the atmosphere. The end result placed the ship near Pluto and a full 2 years distance away from Earth. The fold also took MACROSS ISLAND with it and its citizens had to be moved into the ship. Later during repairs, DR LANG found out the FOLD DRIVES had disappeared.
During it's two year journey, the SDF-1 was attacked several times. In one battle, the ship had to transform into battle mode to fire the MAIN GUN. MACROSS CITY was not built to withstand the ship's internal shifts and was leveled. In another battle, the PINPOINT BARRIER DEFENSE was interfering with the MAIN GUN. LISA HAYES thought of the DADELUS MANUEVER and saved the day.
The ship was later trapped on Mars by KHYRON. The SDF-1 managed to escape but at the cost of Mars BASE SARA, which had to be destroyed to allow the ship to escape. Soon after, the ship's radar was damaged by shrapnel and disabled. After several more battles, it finally drove through a blockade and landed in the Pacific.
The RDF ordered the SDF-1 to go back into space. GLOVAL AND LISA tried to ask for at least the MACROSS CITY survivors to be offloaded, but they were refused. GLOVAL protested and finally got permission by ONTARIO to begin evacuations. Unfortunately, the ZENTRADI attacked and the ship's new shield's overloaded and destroyed several miles of the surface (and also killed pilot BEN DIXON.) As a result, the ship's request was denied.
When DOLZA arrived to destroy all life in the solar system, the SDF-1 crew allied itself with BREETAI'S fleet. During this time, EXEDORE, discovered the FOLD DRIVES had disappeared and was shocked. During the battle, the shield's were overloaded again This time was on purpose, to destroy DOLZA'S ship. The super-dimensional fortress then made a shakey return to Earth.
In the two years following, the ship stayed in a lake named LAKE MACROSS. A second SDF was built to go into space to contact the ROBOTECH MASTERS. In late December, the two ships were attacked by KHYRON. The mad ZENTRADI commander started a kamikaze run towards the ships that obliterated all the ships involved. Casulties included CAPTAIN GLOVAL, CLAUDIA GRANT, SAMMIE PORTER, VANESSA LEEDS, KIM YOUNG, KHYRON, and AZONIA. Radiation from the battle site made it off limits.
Years later, the ROBOTECH MASTERS attacked Earth, looking for the remains. They opened up the remains and tried to grab the PROTOCULTURE inside. A clone of ZOR, ZOR-PRIME, sacrificed himself and destroyed the MASTERS' ship tom prevent them from suceeding. Unfortunately, he accidentaly caused the bloom of the INVID FLOWERS that would later draw the INVID to Earth.
(Note: In the Japanese version, the SDF was only damaged. It was also called Macross. It remains a famous monument. In MACROSS 2, it was destroyed, save only it's "head".)
