MAX STERLING started out has a novice pilot assigned to the SDF-1. Along with BEN DIXON, he was assigned to be under the command of RICK HUNTER after the latter's promotion. MAX showed great piloting skills during his first mission and quickly gained the reputation of being an ace.
When most of Vermillon Sqaudron were captured along with LISA HAYES, MAX escaped and then snuck back onboard the flagship of BREETAI. He managed to disguise his veritech in a uniform and mounted a successful rescue. In the chaos that followed, MAX and BEN got seperated from RICK and LISA. The two groups reunited in time to sneak onboard a Zentradi craft. They then stole a BATTLEPOD and used it to get home.
MAX later had a one-on-one dogfight with Zentradi ace MIRIYA. their battle raged through MACROSS CITY and ended with neither won really victrorious. MIRIYA was furious at not being able to defeat him and she volunteered to go spy on the SDF-1 so she could hunt down and kill MAX. The two finally met at an arcade where they played a 3D fighting game against each other. MAX won and asked her out, not knowing her true nature. MIRIYA accepted and when he went to meet her she attacked him. He disarmed her and asked her why she was trying to kill him. She explained her past and begged to die. MAX told her he was in love with her and managed to calm her down. In fact, the two fell deeply in love and were married almost immediately afterward. The wedding was the first for both human and Zentradi. It was one of the catalysts that made BREETAI side with the Earth.
Two years later, MAX and MIRIYA had a child named DANA. The two continued to fly missions and fought alongside RICK against KHYRON. The STERLING family lived through the disasterous multiple destruction of SDF-1, SDF-2, and KHYRON'S flagship. Years later, MAX and MIRIYA became part of the crew of SDF-3. Their current fates are unknown.
(Note: the SENTINELS book series has MAX and MIRIYA with another child named Aurora. In the Japanese version, MAX and MIRIYA end up having a large family with many children. One of them becomes the star of the Japanese cartoon MACROSS 7.)
