The principle behind the MASS DEVICE was created by a New England scietist named Dr Vandemeer. MASS stands for (M)olecular (A)ssembler (S)crambler (S)ender. It was suppossed to be able to turn mass into energy and be able to send it to any point in the globe. Cobra captured Vandemeer and stole the idea behind the MASS DEVICE from him. He was rescued by the Joes and agreed to make them their own device. The first use of Cobra's MASS DEVICE was to steal the Relay Star Satellite from its resting place.
The MASS DEVICE was powered by three rare objects. The first was radioactive crystals found in a cave on the Sea of Ice. The Joes fought Cobra but had to reteat when Cobra released a radioactive cloud. SNAKE-EYES got caught in the cloud while trying to free his friends. He escaped the cave with the crystals and was eventually healed by an old hermit.
The Joes meanwhile tried to get the second element, a substance known as Heavy Water. They fought an undersea battle with the BARONESS that was interrupted by mutated Tube-Worms. The sides teamed up and destroyed them. They then left with both groups getting what they wanted. Soon after, SNAKE-EYES returned with crystals.
The final element was a meteorite located in a volcano. The Joes tried to recover the meteor but it was stolen by Cobra. The Joes then stormed the COBRA AIRCARRIER and won the meteor. DESTRO managed to escape with a chunk of the meteor during the attack. (He also captured SCARLETT.)
The Joes used their MASS DEVICE to stop Cobra from destroying New York. They then used the device to beam over an attack force and defeat Cobra. DESTRO tried to point Cobra's MASS DEVICE straight down so it will destroy Earth's core. The Joes found it just in time and GUNG-HO destroyed the control panel with machine gun fire. The Joes have since then disarmed their MASS DEVICE. Dr Vandemeer has gone back to his retirement in the New England countryside.
