MAETEL is the daughter of QUEEN PROMETHIUM and DR BAN. She and her sister, EMERALDAS, tried to prevent the mechanization of their home. Despite killing HARDGEAR, the man who started the MACINE EMPIRE, the sisters lost their mother to a machine body. MAETEL then wore black as a sign of mourning from that day forward.
For untold generations, she has rode the rails on the GALAXY EXPRESS, befriended young men and then betraying them to her mother, who uses them has parts in her machine world. In reality, MAETEL chose those she did in the hopes of using them to one day destroy her mother'sevil empire. All the while she continues to journey through the sea of stars. MAETEL also involved herself in the adventures of her sister, EMERALDAS and the space pirate CAPTAIN HARLOCK. During one of these adventures, she sent a warning to TADASHI DAIBA to prevent him from creating a ring made from RHINEGOLD.
While her real body is on Pluto, she travels in bodies made in the images of different women. One of these women is TETSURO'S MOTHER. MAETEL first met TETSURO himself when the latter tried to steal a ticket to get onboard 999. She saved him from the police and agreed to help him get revenge on COUNT MECHA, who had killed his mother. MAETEL took him aboard 999 and guided him in their journey through the cosmos. Along the way, they met SHADOW on Pluto and BOSS ANTARES on Titan. When TETSURO fired a shot at the QUEEN EMERALDAS, MAETEL interceded on his behalf and asked EMERALDAS herself to aid him. While TETSURO went to get his revenge, MAETEL waited for him outside the TIME CASTLE. With her was the space pirate, CAPTAIN HARLOCK. When it came time for her to betray TETSURO, she at first did nothing, but then she went and stopped her mother from harming him. She then revealed that DR BAN was still alive in her locket and that if she threw it into the heart of the planet, it would cause a chain reaction that would destroy the planet. PROMETHIUM dared MAETEL to do it. She hesistated and TETSURO grabbed it out of her hands and threw it. They managed to escape before the planet blew up. Afterwards, MAETEL left TETSURO on Earth and vanished.
Two years later, TETSURO boarded the 999 following a message that he thought was from MAETEL. When they finally found each other, MAETEL tried to get him to leave but he insisted on staying. Their journey ended at FINAL STATION ANDROMEDA, where MAETEL had another confrontation with her mother, who survived their last encounter. The battle that followed got out of hand, but MAETEL and TETSURO both survived. After a brief stop,TETSURO continued on his way back to Earth while MAETEL stayed behind.
MAETEL continues to ride the rails of the GALAXY EXPRESS. She will return one day. That is a something that can be assured.
