LISA HAYES grew up raised by her father, ADMIRAL HAYES. He instilled in her a tough attitude based on disipline and military professionalism. She went on to join the RDF and became its first officer. She became friends with the bridge crew especially CLAUDIA GRANT, who roomed with her during training. She had a fiance named CARL RIBER, but he was killed at SARA BASE. Since then, she has never pursued another relationship and has been seen by other has being cold and aloof.
LISA helped coordinate defense during the battle that erupted on Inaugration Day. When MARCROSS CITY was caught in the spacefold, she organized the rescue of the inhabitants and the relocation of the city into the ship's cargo bay. She was shocked to learn she had by accident ordered civilian RICK HUNTER to fly a VERITECH. She was also shocked by him calling her a sourpuss. That started a long peroid of time where LISA made RICK'S life a living hell. What did not help the young man was that LISA always gave orders to the fighters in battle.
In battle over Saturn, LISA created the unorthodox move called the DADALEUS MANUVER. Months later, she was ordered to search SARA BASE for supplies. When it was found to be part of a Zentradi trap, LISA had to blow up the base. She activated the timer but on her way out found CARL'S room. She stayed in the room and did not want to leave. RICK HUNTER had to pull her out at the last second. She was angry at the turn of events and got more upset when RICK was promoted for saving her.
LISA and almost all of RICK'S squadron were captured by Zentradi. During their interrogation, they were asked how humans were made. BEN DIXON answered that a prime way was by kissing. LISA was ordered to demonstrate. She ordered RICK to kiss her and under protest, he did so. Later they were rescued by MAX STERLING, however in the getaway, the group was separated. LISA and RICK ended up in an abandoned part of BREETAI'S ship. There they got to know each other better and soon both discovered they had feelings for the other. Both RICK and LISA kept this revelation from one another. They eventually escaped and made it back to SDF-1.
LISA became attracted to LYNN KYLE because he reminded her of CARL. She and RICK later were trapped by a ship transformation and again took the time to bond. the two were now becoming more than friends. Shortly after,LISA and CAPTAIN GLOVAL went to ALASKA BASE to report on the Zentradi. LISA hoped to have her father on her side but he remained cold and distant. Worse yet, he sent her a letter saying how he wanted her off the ship.
LISA was so distracted during a battle that she accidentally shot RICK down. Filled with remorse, she visited him in the hospital several times. It was she that told him of the death of his best friend, ROY FOKKER. Later she tried again to talk to her father but ended up stuck at ALASKA BASE working as a communications officer. She stayed there during the final battle with DOLZA. She watched in horror as her father was killed in an explosion. She was rescued from the base's destruction by RICK.
In the two years since,she and RICK grew close, but neither could get the courage to try to start up a serous relationship with the other. Even worse was the fact that MINMEI was going to RICK for comfort from her busy career. The last straw came when RICK stood LISA up to see MINMEI.She stayed hurt for a long time. Meanwhile, she was given command of SDF-2. She went to RICK to say good-bye, but at that moment, KHYRON attacked. RICK was ordered to choose between LISA or MINMEI and chose to go with LISA to fight KHYRON. LISA fought alongside her old friends on SDF-1. When it appeared that KHYRON was going to ram into the the ship, GLOVAL and the rest of the crew pushed LISA out an escape pod. She found RICK by the lake and the two finally confessed their love.
Years later, RICK and LISA were married. They both boarded SDF-3 and headed for parts unknown. Their fate is a mystery.
(Note: LISA'S Japanese name is Misa Hiyase. In the SENTINELS book series, she has a child named Roy Hunter.)
