GRIMLOCK was created by RATCHET and WHEELJACK after they went with SPIKE to a museum and were impressed by dinosaur bones. They created a group of Autobots called DINOBOTS. GRIMLOCK was the strongest and because of that, became leader. The DINOBOTS were trouble at first due to their less than intelligent brains. WHEELJACK gave them a slight increase in intelligence and GRIMLOCK led them in a successful rescue mission.
GRIMLOCK and the other DINOBOTS sided with MEGATRON for a time. They fought two other DINOBOTS named SWOOP and SNARL. Eventually, OPTIMUS PRIME helped GRIMLOCK and the DINOBOTS see that MEGATRON was just using them and the DINOBOTS returned to the side of good. Afterwards, GRIMLOCK led the DINOBOTS in an effort to stop a raging tsunami from flooding the coast. He also led them in defending the ARK from an invasion by the CONSTRUCTICONS.
GRIMLOCK and the DINOBOTS were exiled from the ARK after causing damage during a brawl. They settled on a time lost island nicknamed Dinobot Island. Thwy were ambushed by MEGATRON and trapped in a tar pit. They freed themselves and led real dinosaurs in a counterattack that helped defeat the Decepticons.
GRIMLOCK led the DINOBOTS out of the ARK and to CYBERTRON. They were captured by SHOCKWAVE, but freed by SPIKE and CARLY.
In 2005, GRIMLOCK led the DINOBOTS in a counterattack on DEVASTATOR during the battle of AUTOBOT CITY. They stopped him but were knocked out themselves. Later GRIMLOCK was part of the shuttle crew that was shot down over QUINTESSA. He and the other DINOBOTS teamed with WHEELIE and saved KUP and HOT ROD from the SHARKTICONS. Soon after, GRIMLOCK led an attack on UNICRON.
A year later, GRIMLOCK went with RODIMUS PRIME to CHARR to investigate the Decepticons. He held his own in battle against the weakened Decepticons and defended RODIMUS after the latter was knocked unconcious. He was part of the group that got stranded on GOO following the destruction of QUINTESSA.
GRIMLOCK befriended DANIEL and the two acidentally went through a portal into another dimension. They became involed in a civil war but were rescued by CARLY and several Autobots.
An accident gave GRIMLOCK super intelligence. His new intelligence aided the Autobots but alienated him from his DINOBOT buddies. He later used his brainpower to create the TECHNOBOTS. He then sacrificed his increase in intelligence to give it to COMPUTRON so the gestalt could save the Autobots. He quickly went back to his old ways.
(Note: GRIMLOCK becomes leader of the Autobots for a short time in the comics. He plays a major supporting role in the GENERATION 2 mini series.)
