1ST APPEARANCE: DRAGONBALL: SECRET OF THE DRAGONBALL
GOKU was born a Saiyan named Kakkarote. His father was the warrior BARDOCK. When he was little, he was sent to Earth to prepare it for take over. When he landed he was found by a man named Gohan. Gohan named him GOKU and became his surrogate father. At first, GOKU was incredibly violent. His aggressive nature was curbed by a near fatal blow to the head caused by a fall. Gohan died under mysterious circumstances. GOKU stayed all alone until for years he met BULMA. She was on a search for DRAGONBALLS. She noticed he had one and invited him along. They traveled together and met interesting characters such OOLONG, and the desert bandit YAMCHA. He also met the girl CHI-CHI, who was smittened by him. GOKU helped his friends fight off the evil PILAF.
GOKU later studied under MASTER ROSHI. There he met KRILLEN, who would become his best friend. He also studied under KAMI. He took part several times in the World Martial Arts Tournament. There he made an enemy in PICCOLO, KAMI'S evil half. He ended marrying CHI-CHI and the two settled down and had a son named GOHAN. Their peaceful life was shattered when GOHAN was kidnapped by the henchmen of GARLIC JR. GOKU teamed with KRILLEN and pulled off a successful rescue.
GOKU'S life was turned upside down again when the Saiyan RADITZ appeared. He claimed to be GOKU'S brother and was appalled at his pacifistic nature. RADITZ took GOHAN away and demanded GOKU destroy the planet. GOKU formed a truce with PICCOLO and the two fought RADITZ in a very one-sided battle. RADITZ was easily beating both fighters. Finally, PICCOLO used his PARTICLE BEAM CANNON to shoot RADITZ. GOKU held on to his brother so he would not get away. Both were killed by the blast.
GOKU got permision from KING YAMA to travel SNAKE WAY. He took almost a year to get to the other side. He arrived at KING KAI'S HOUSE and trained under him. He learned to summon the KEOKEN ATTACK and the SPIRIT BOMB. By the time he was done, his friends used the DRAGONBALLS to wish him back. He ran at incredible speeds to get to his friends, who were fighting the Saiyans, VEGETA and NAPPA. He arrived shortly after PICCOLO sacrificed himself to protect GOHAN. GOKU made short work of NAPPA, But he had a hard time against VEGETA. The Saiyen even survived an attack by the SPIRIT BOMB. He was finally defeated by GOHAN. GOKU meanwhile, had to be hospitalized.
He recovered with the help of some SENZU BEANS. He then flew off in a spaceship created by DR BRIEFS to NAMEK. He got to NAMEK in time to help KRILLEN and GOHAN fight off the GINYU FORCE. He also teamed with VEGETA to face off against the evil FREEZA. During the battle, VEGETA died and GOKU transformed into a SUPER-SAIYAN. He defeated FREEZA and after a long training period returned home.
On his return home, he was warned by TRUNKS of the appearance of GERO'S Androids. He fought them three years later but a virus took him out. He recovered in time to fight the evil CELL. He managed to fight him to a near standstill but eventually had to back down and let GOHAN take his place. When he saw that CELL was about to destroy the Earth, he used his powers of INTSTANT TELEPORTATION to send them both to KING KAI'S PLANET. The blast destroyed the planet and killed all present except for CELL who regenerated. GOKU'S spirit then helped spur his son to victory. In the aftermath he wished to remain in the afterlife to avoid attracting menaces that would endanger the Earth. He did promise GOHAN he watch over him though.
GOKU took part in the Otherworld Tournament where he bested the warrior PIKKON. He then was given special permission to go to Earth for one day to take part in the WORLD MARTIAL TOURNAMENT. There he reunited with his friends after a seven year absence. He also met his youngest son, GOTEN, who was born after his death. Unfortunately, the day was darkened by the appearance of BABIDI and MAJIN BUU. GOKU fought an entranced VEGETA but was knocked out by the Saiyan prince. He awoke in time to help GOTEN and TRUNKS train to fight the monster BUU before his time was up and he returned to the afterlife.
He was brought back to life by the sacrifice of the OLD KAI. He and VEGETA then teamed up and battled MAJIN by merging into the warrior known as VEGITO. The fusion didn't last and soon they had evacuate Earth when KID BUU destroyed it. They then battled him on the KAI'S WORLD. After the Earth and its people were restored, GOKU destroyed KID BUU with a SPIRIT BOMB.
GOKU then took part in another WORLD MARTIAL TOURNAMENT. There, he noticed his opponent, UUB, was the reincarnation of KID BUU. He and UUB stopped their fight and GOKU took UUB to parts unknown to train. He later retunred to his family.
(Note: In DRAGONBALL GT, he get turned into a child and reaches Super Saiyen 4.)
