EMIL LANG was part of the team that explored SDF-1 when it crashed on Earth in 1999. During the expedition, he was zapped by some of the strange machinery inside. This gave the knowledge to integrate Robotechnology with Earth technology. It also turned his eyes pitch black in color.
LANG became engineer aboard SDF-1. During the chaos of the first battle with the Zentradi, CAPTAIN GLOVAL told LANG to activate the FOLD SYSTEM while in Earth's atmosphere. LANG advised against it. Sure enough, the fold manuver went bad, stranding the ship near Pluto and taking MACROSS ISLAND into space. LANG discovered the fold drives had vanished. He was able to use energy he found and create the PINPOINT BARRIER. He also solved the probelm of the MAIN GUN being unable to fire because the fold drives were what attached it to the reflex furnace.
Upon return to Earth, LANG rebuilt the ship's shields. However, the shields overloaded during a battle and ended up destroying several miles of the surrounding area. LANG used the overload probelm has an advantage during the great battle with DOLZA. It was a shield overload that destroyed DOLZA'S massive ship.
After the battle with DOLZA, LANG spent time on other projects unknown to the general public. Several years later, he was part of the crew of SDF-3. He has not been seen since the SDF-3 left Earth.
