BEN DIXON was a pilot assigned to RICK HUNTER after the latter was promoted to lieutenant. BEN tends to be loud and boisterious. He likes to brag about his flying skills and claim he can take down entire rows of fighters. Unfortunately, his record really isn't that good. His attitude is opposite to that of his friend and fellow squadron mate, MAX STERLING. MAX tends to shy and quiet despite his impressive record.
On his first mission, BEN was cut to pieces by KHYRON. He got zero kills and a minor head injury. He was part of the recon mission that was captured by BREETAI. BEN tried to fight the Zentradi leader, but BREETAI used BEN'S own VERITECH GUNPOD to smash the fighter's head. When MAX rescued everyone, he and BEN got separated from RICK and LISA HAYES. They were eventually able to regroup and sneek aboard the command ship of AZONIA.
BEN was promoted following his return to the SDF-1. When RICK replaced the late ROY FOKKER as leader of Skull Squadron, BEN was made his third in command. During the attempt to evacuate the citizens of MACROSS CITY to Ontario, BEN DIXON helped the rest of Skull Squadron keep back the Zentradi. Unfortunately, bombardments by the Zentradi overheated the SDF'S experimental shields. The shields finally overloaded and sent out a massive energy wave that destroyed everything for miles. BEN was caught in the wave and died when his VERITECH exploded.
A shortwhile later, RICK was writing to BEN'S parents when BEN himself appeared in a vision. He told RICK his death was not RICK'S fault and that it was just part of what happen to pilots sometimes.
(Note: In Macross:DYRL, BEN DIXON has a different death. He is shot down at the start of a battle between Skull Squadron and MIRIYA.)
