ADMIRAL DONALD HAYES was a lifetime military officer. He rose quickly through the ranks. His high ideals transfered to his family. He caused his daughter, LISA HAYES, to join the military. While the SDF-1 was being built, ADMIRAL HAYES was busy building the GRAND CANNON in Alaska. He went on to become a major player in military and political affairs.
When the SDF-1 returned to Earth, CAPTAIN GLOVAL and LISA HAYES went Alaska to talk with the major leaders of UNSpacey, including ADMIRAL HAYES. LISA hoped see could appeal to her father for help. Instead he was cold and distant and refused to help. He later wrote a letter to her explaining that he didn't want her aboard the SDF. Later LISA tried to get his support on allowing SDF-1 to try to negociate with the ZENTRADI. He agreed but also kept LISA at Alaska Base. He revealed that he wanted to use the GRAND CANNON to destroy the ZENTRADI.
During the battle against DOLZA, ADMIRAL HAYES ordered the GRAND CANNON fired. The powerful blast, combined with the ZENTRADI attacks, damaged the CANNON critically. ADMIRAL HAYES called LISA to see if she was okay. Unfortunately as she watched, the command center where ADMIRAL HAYES was stationed exploded, killing him and all those around him. LISA was later saved by RICK HUNTER.
