| QUARRYMEN CREATED BY: JOHN CANMORE (disguised as JOHN CASTAWAY) 1ST APPEARENCE: GARGOYLES: THE JOURNEY The QUARRYMEN were created by JOHN CANMORE as a replacement for the HUNTERS. CANMORE disguised himself as JOHN CASTAWAY, millionaire who created the QUARRYMEN so that ordinary citizens that were afraid of the Gargoyles could have a means to defend themselves and perhaps strike back. Members of the group can be recognized by the black uniforms they were. these uniforms also have a black hood that covers the wearer's face. When out hunting Gargoyles, members carry electrified hammers that have been shown to be capable of hurting a Gargoyle. The QUARRYMEN are made up mostly of ordinary people from a wide range of backgrounds. Also, CASTAWAY recruited several mercenaries to help lead efforts in attacking Gargoyles. Among the first people to join were MACBETH'S aides BANQUO and FLEANCE, the mother of two kids named BILLY and SUSAN, and a young man named VINNIE. The group launched an attack on GOLIATH and ELISA and chased them to the CLOCK TOWER remains. Just as CASTAWAY was about to strike the killing blow, VINNIE grew appalled at CASTAWAY'S ruthlessness and turned on him and the QUARRYMEN. CASTAWAY retreated and VINNIE left to go take a job overseas. A small band of QUARRYMEN attacked a group called the PIT CREW, who had expressed a pro-gargoyle stance. One QUARYMAN, a man named GARY LEE PACKER, was arrested by the police after injuries prevented him from leaving the scene. He was taken to Manhatten Medical for treatment. However, a medical technician working there was part of the QUARRYMEN. He alerted another member named Curtis to where PACKER was and that the gargoyle HUDSON was there getting eye surgery. HUDSON found out about the QUARRYMEN from DR CARRIE BENTON and he and his friend JEFFERY ROBBINS held them off until help arrived. One member of the QUARRYMEN was present at the facility holding GLOIATH when the latter was on trial for robbery. The unknown member joined in when the angry mob tried to rush GOLIATH'S police van. A short time later, QUARRYMEN attacked DEMONA and ANGELA. However, it may be possible that these were not real QUARRYMEN, but people hired by DEMONA to dress up as them and stage an attack so she could sway ANGELA into trusting her. CASTAWAY led an attempt to gain illegal weapons. ELISA spied on the group but was found out. The Gargoyles came to her rescue and defeated them. CASTAWAY then attacked a train carrying ANGELA and BRONX. GOLIATH confronted CASTAWAY and saved the train. This was a major defeat for the QUARRYMEN in that the human passengers saw how the group was willing to kill them to get to the Gargoyles. Among the humans on the train was MARGOT YALE who had supported the group in the past but withdrew after the incident and instead went over the Gargoyle cause. Despite this setback, the QUARRYMEN are still in operation. (Note: According the original stroy, the QUARRYMEN were to have been revealed to have been financed by the ILLUMINATI.)
