DAVID XANATOS was born in Bar Harbor, Maine to PETROS XANATOS, a poor fisherman. When he was young, someone sent him a rare 10th century coin worth 10 grand. DAVID used the coin to start his own company. The trade off was he and father had a falling out and stopped speaking to each other. His principle business rival became HALCYON RENARD of Cyberboitics. DAVID managed to steal away from him his assistant OWEN BURNETT, his daughter FOX, ANTON SEVARIUS, and his wife ANASTASIA. He also became a low-ranking member of the Illuminati
At one point, DAVID met DEMONA. She convinced him to buy CASTLE WYVERN and move it to the top of the AERIE BUILDING, the headquarters of Xanatos Enterprises. This freed GOLIATH and the other Gargoyles that survived from a curse. DAVID tricked them into helping DEMONA attack Cyberboitics. When the Gargoyles found out the truth thanks to policewoman ELIZA MAZA, DAVID and DEMONA attacked them with the STEEL CLAN. DAVID managed to go to prison but he still was able to arrange for FOX and the PACK to attack the Gargoyles. He was released early and then he engaged in several assaults on GOLIATH and his clan. In one he used science and sorcery to create COLDSTONE. In another, he turned ELIZA'S brother DEREK against her. He later arranged for DEREK and other to transformed into the MUTATES. He also tried to use HUDSON as a guinea pig for the CAULDRON OF LIFE. The gargoyle got away and OWEN tested it for his employer, resulting in his hand turning to stone.
DAVID XANATOS arranged for FOX to be released early from prison. He proposed to her and gave her the EYE OF ODIN, When the EYE transformed her into a werewolf, DAVID teamed with GOLIATH to free her. He married FOX in a ceremony attended by GOLIATH, DEMONA, OWEN BURNETT, and PETROS XANATOS. No sooner did the ceremony end then almost the entire wedding party was transported to the late 900s by the PHOENIX GATE. He saved a Norman ambassador who gave him several coins. XANATOS had one coin sealed away to be given to his younger self 1000 years later. It turned out that the time trip was staged to show PETROS that DAVID was a selfmade man.
DAVID and GOLIATH teamed up a second time to battle DEMONA after she conjured up a spell that transformed most of New York City's human population into stone at night. He then lost hishold over TALON (DEREK MAZA) and the MUTATES. He tried again for immortality by trying to capture COYOTE THE TRCICKSTER only to be stopped by GOLIATH, ELIZA, and her father and sister. Months later, FOX gave birth to ALEXANDER, their first son. OBERON appeared wanting to take the child away to AVALON since ANASTASIA RENARD turned out to be TITANIA queen of the faire folk. XANATOS teamed with GOLIATH again in order to save his child. OBERON was finally defeated by FOX herself. He then allowed her and DAVID to keep their child. A short time later, DAVID XANATOS made a truce with the Gargoyles and allowed them to return to CASTLE WYVERN.
XANATOS stood by the Gargoyles as they had to bear attacks by the QUARRYMEN. He also offered to help them go into hiding but the offer was refused.
