DANA STERLING is the daughter of MAX and MIRIYA STERLING, the two best aces of the First Robotech War. When she was very young, her parents joined with other heroes to venture off into space. DANA and her friend, BOWIE GRANT, were left in the care of GENERAL ROLF EMERSON. DANA and BOWIE grew up and both joined the Army of the Southern Cross. They were assigned to the 15th Tank Battlion and DANA was made leader of the group after SEAN PHILIPS was demoted. DANA'S style clashed with the by-the-book ethics of ANGELO DANTE and got her in hot water with NOVA SATORI of the Global Military Police, but after she proved her worth in battle against the ROBOTECH MASTERS, even her harshest critics had to admit she was a fine soldier.
DANA met an enemy pilot in battle and became obessed with finding him. The enemy pilot was eventually captured and revealed to be a human looking man named ZOR. DANA befriended ZOR and in turn the alien awoke the Zentradi of DANA'S personality. ZOR turned out to be a spy planted by the ROBOTECH MASTERS. DANA went to great lengths to save him, even penetrating the enemy mothership.
DANA followed ZOR back to the mothership when he decided to kill the ROBOTECH MASTERS. She witnessed him kill every last one and she saw the release of the Invid Flower when ZOR sacrificed himself to prevent the MASTERS from getting the remains of the SDF-1.
DANA and her friends later boarded a ship and left Earth to join her family.
(Note: DANA has many brothers and sisters in the Japanese continuity. Her sister Aurora appears in the Sentinels book series. Another sister is the main character of the cartoon series MACROSS 7.)
