Annual Membership Meeting in Binghamton Mon. Sept. 27

"From Welfare Reform to Economic Justice" will be the theme of Hunger Action Network’s 17th annual membership meeting in Binghamton on Monday Sept. 27th at the Tabernacle United Methodist Church, 83 Main St. Featured speakers include Dr. Frances Fox Piven on the "Growing Diversity in Income and Wealth" and Jan Poppendieck, author of Sweet Charity, the End of Entitlements who will lead a panel discussion on the role of emergency food programs at a time when government is curtailing anti-poverty entitlement programs.
The membership meeting will determine Hunger Action’s central outreach campaign theme(s) for the coming year. Last year, the membership selected the Empire State Jobs Program and increasing funding for the Hunger Prevention Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) as HANNYS’ top priorities. Proposed central themes for 1999-2000 include: allowing college internships and work study to count as "work" for welfare; Living Wages; HPNAP; the Empire State Jobs program; and the Campaign for Economic Security (which includes several of the above issues, as well as the minimum wage and child care).
Hunger Action Network will also elect its statewide officers and Board members. The meeting is also an opportunity to network with other anti-hunger and justice advocates from around NY. To register, please fill the coupon on the enclosed brochure.
