On 8-3-04 we were paged to this fire at 2335.  We were on scene until 0725.  We received mutual aid from Allerton, Corydon, Garden Grove & Derby fire departments.  The Wayne County Emergency Manager, Humeston First Responders, Wayne County Ambulance, Wayne County Sheriff's Office & The Iowa State Patrol also provided assistance.
This house was struck by lightning during a storm that dumped 3.5" of rain in about 2 1/2 hours.  We were able to conatin the fire to the attic and the upstairs part of the house.  While the structure is a total loss we were able to save most of the contents of the first floor (furniture, photos, clothing).
This is the west side of the house.
This is the east side of the house.
These pictures show where the fire was contained to.
The damage shown here was caused by a backhoe that we had to bring in to get at a fire in the roof above the kitchen.
