going for what is called a "scree run" - 900 feet into the crater of Mt. Tarawera, a volcano near Rotorua, which erupted in 1886

(it usually erupts every 1,400 years & is owned by the Maori tribe, Ngati Rangitihi)

that's Victor, the Kiwi guide who drove me with 2 other tourists through rugged bush, via 4WD to the crater, and let me clench his hand at times when i got oozy from looking down at the vertical drop!

most of the earth here is comprised of 3 forms of silica
after the hike, i rested at the edge of the crater...

vibrant colors of red, green along with black and white silica, produced surreal views, and i felt as though i was part of a landscape painting.
(but then again - that's how i felt during most of my adventures in NZ!)
