Tom's Rose Garden
Zepherine Drouhin
(Bizot, 1868)
I bought this as a small cutting last summer from Heirloom Old Garden
Roses. It barely made it through the winter, but is now finally showing good growth.
It hasn't produced any blooms yet, but I'm looking forward to the deep rose-pink flowers
that are fragrant. It is a climber and may reach 8-12 feet. It is supposed to produce
flowers very heavily.
"A famous Bourbon rose. Vigorous shrub or climber
up to 10 ft. Flowers very bright, cerise-carmine, semi-double, of medium size but
borne in large clusters. Strongly scented. Free-flowering , mid to late June and recurrent
throughout summer if old heads are pruned off. Young growth is tinted bronzy red.
Distinct by absence of thorns from main stems. One of the most popular old roses for
this character and for its freedom of flower. Rather susceptible to blacktop and mildew.
Sometimes used as a hedge and will stand heavy pruning." The Dictionary of
Roses by Gault & Synge
