Tom's Rose Garden
Celsiana
(unknown, before 1750)
After failing with hardwood cuttings, I broke down and bought this beautiful
Damask rose from MEA Nursery as an own-root plant. It is now in a pot waiting
for the weather to allow transplanting and rearranging of the garden. This rose
is in both the Old City Cemetery and Mr. Elder's Garden, and I love the blooms
and the wonderful fragrance. The plant shape is vase-like and will get over 5
feet tall.
“A Damask rose of vigorous growth up to 5 ft. Flowers in
clusters, large, semi-double, bright dog rose pink, fading to a blush-pink, with
prominent golden centre, opening wide, about 4 in. across. Scented. Foliage
greyish-green, also scented. A beautiful old rose raised prior to 1750 and
figured by Redoute’” The Dictionary of Roses by Gault &
Synge
