MY NEW MP3 CD PLAYER
This years top-of-the-line MP3/CD receiver is the Kenwood Excelon Z828, which offers numerous improvements over Kenwoods first MP3/CD receiver. Most apparent is the new front panel design, capped by the 4-Tone Fine-Dot, color fluorescent display. Offering remarkable resolution, the display shows text and animated 3D graphics with exceptional clarity. The faceplate is also one of the easiest to read and most configurable found in any car audio receiver. Kenwood has also increased the speed with which the player accesses MP3 files over last year and has improved how it reads embedded ID3 tags in MP3 files. In an improvement to sound quality, Kenwood has employed a new integrated circuit (IC2-IV), which handles all audio functions (except for the System Es + advanced crossover). IC2-IV features a dual power supply input, which improves the circuits dynamic range and signal-to-noise performance while lowering crosstalk between channels. The IC2-IV also houses the new System Q EX Sound Control contouring feature, allowing unprecedented control over bass, treble and midrange frequencies. Additionally, System Q EX provides five pre-set equalization settings based on music selection (rock, top-40/pop, jazz, easy, and flat) and three based on speaker type. These two types of presets can be combined to create a wide variety of response curves. In addition to the presets, System Q EX, lets users manually select the center frequency within each frequency range (bass, midrange, treble), boost or cut the level of the center frequency, and adjust the Q factor of the midrange and bass center frequencies. In addition, there is a separate on/off control for bass extension, which extends response below the bass center frequency. The new midrange control allows listeners to obtain a clearer, more front-forward sound, preferable for vocals. System Q EX allows users adjust the response using three pre-set selections based on the speaker complement used with the receiver, or to make their own adjustments. For example, when using factory speakers, the OEM selection can be chosen. Two different settings are also available for listeners using aftermarket speakers; one for 6 and 6x 9 speakers, and another for 4 and 5 speakers. There is a memory feature for savings customized settings which differ from the factory pre-sets. Users can also manually search through MP3 files for the track of their choice on both the Z828 and MP8017. In another new System Q EX feature this year, Kenwood has added a scan option, so that listeners may sample five-second intervals of music in each of the five pre set music modes (rock, top 40, etc.). In all, System Q EX provides for an unprecedented degree of choice and customization designed to give optimum performance in any vehicle, using any speaker package, and for every type of music. The Z828 has an input that is compatible with future digital radio tuner hardware designed to receive satellite broadcasts from the Sirius Satellite digital radio service, as well as locally broadcast digital programming based on iBiquity digital radio technology. Additional features found on the new Z828 include a higher maximum power output than last years Kenwood Excelon products. The Z828 has a maximum power rating of 47 watts x 4. The units full bandwidth power rating (less than 1% THD) is 22 watts x 4. The Z828 displays CD Text from appropriately encoded CDs. The text scrolls across the units display as the CD is playing. The unit also supports RDS (Radio Data System) functions. The new Z828 also offers Dual Zone listening and control. When used with the an optional adapter, Dual Zone audio control allows the receiver to operate its front and rear channels independently and play two different stereo sources simultaneously. When used with a Kenwood Excelon amplifier, Kenwoods exclusive Bass Management System allows the user to activate the amplifiers switchable (+6dB, +12dB) bass boost circuit directly from the Z828. The Z828 incorporates Kenwoods Zero Bit Mute circuitry, which independently mutes both channels (L/R) of audio output when no digital information is coming through the system, so that the system is perfectly quiet between tracks or when audio sources are muted.
