On March 24, 2000 I had the ultimate scare. I was in a motorcycle accident. While pulling out of a parking lot, a school bus turned in front of me, knocking me off of my bike and onto Business Loop 70. I suffered from a tib/fib fracture in my right
leg which took two surgeries to fix. For the first one they placed an external fixator on (one of those cage thingies) to stabalize the bone until the swelling went down. For the second they went in and put in two plates and twelve screws that are permanent. I am now sentenced to walking on crutches (and the scooter I get to ride at the grocery store) until July.
I am putting some pictures up that were taken at the hospital. Some of them are pretty gross looking, but
people have told me they are interested in seeing them. I guess it's like gawking at a car wreck when you drive by...
This was about a week into my hospital stay. Notice my fashionable slipper? Mom got it for me so it would be easier to walk during my PT sessions, since my left foot was swollen and bruised.
This self-portrait was taken after my two day stay in the intensive care unit. On my first night in the hospital I was given
too much morphine (OOOPS!), which made me quit breathing (hey had me pretty doped up). After that I had to have that nifty oxygen tube for
a few days.
This is an overhead view of my external fixator. There
were two pins that went straight through my bone (on the top) and one that went straight through my ankle. Notice the bruises and swelling?
This is a lovely look at some road rash that I received. There was quite a bit of debris in the wound from the asphalt, but it eventually worked its way out.
Thankfully, I had many guests to help pass the long nine days. MJ (our Harley salesman) made sure to bring refreshments and his extra set of teeth, so we had a good time.
