Hudson Valley Home Educators NYS MUSEUM
The Hudson Valley is full of educational experiences -- yours for the taking.  The New York State Museum, located on Madison Avenue in the Cultural Education Center of the Empire State Plaza, is a rich resource of information for all ages.

The museum offers both "long-term" and temporary exhibits.  Included in the long-term exhibits are "Native American Crafts" (clothing, pottery, baskets, etc.) with artworks representing the Mohawk, Tuscarora, and Onondaga.  The "Adirondack Wilderness" displays show the region in stages:  the Adirondacks of 4,000 years ago, of the 1800's, and the area as it is today.  See a stuffed moose, mountain lion, and other native wildlife in their native habitat.  The "Native People's of New York" shows the Adirondacks as it would have been just before humans populated the area, the "Ice Age Hunters", "The Forest Foragers", and a "Mohawk-Iroquois Village", which includes a "life-size re-creation of an Iroquois longhouse".

Temporary exhibits have included "The Wreck of the Henrietta Marie", with artifacts including ship's logs and numerous artifacts salvaged from the slave ship in the early 1970's, and a wonderful exhibit of NYS fossils, some of which are a billion-years-old, put together by the Museum's paleontologists.

The museum is open from 9:30 - 5pm (except on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's).  Admission is free but a donation of $2 per person or $5 per family is suggested.  The exhibits are well worth it.  The Museum Cafe is open 7 days a week from 7-3pm on weekdays and 10-2pm on weekends.  Museum Phone:  518-474-5877.  Museum Shop: 518-449-7860.       -- Museum Website --
