Unforgiven

This poem was written in the view point of someone who felt what is referred to as "survivor's guilt". The first part, in quotation marks, is from the "Serenity Prayer". Its modified to fit the poem.

"God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change
The things I can
The wisdom to know the difference"
And the strength
To let you go.
For I did not have the serenity
To accept my death in place of yours,
The courage to try,
Nor the wisdom to know if I could.
And most of all,
God grant me forgiveness
For I would have done
Anything to ease your pain--
Given my life for you,
Gone into the dark for you,
Done it all for you.
But I was too late.
Too late to help,
Too late to change it,
And too late to mourn.
God grant me forgiveness.
