| Summary findings - On June 30, 2001 -1,965,495 prisoners were under Federal or Stae jurisdiction, (includes prisoners in custody and persons under the legal authority of a prison system but who are held outside its facilities)- the total increased 1.6% from mid year 2000, less than the average annual growth of 4.0% since yearend 1995. -there were an estimated 472 prison inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents- up form 292 at yearend 1990. -the number of women under the jurisdiction of Sate or Federal prison authorities increased 0.7% from July 1, 2000 to June 30, 2001, reaching 94,336. The number of men rose 1.1% totaling 1,311,195 at yearend. At mid year 2001 there were 4,848 sentenced black male inmates per 100,000 black males in the U.S., compared to 1,668 sentenced Hispanic male inmates per 100,000 Hispanic males and 705 white male inmates per 100,000 white males. Between 1990 and 1999, the increasing number of violent offenders accounted for 51% of the total growth of the State prison population; 20% of the total growth was attributable to the increasing number of drug offenders. |
