Day 5: Entire period. Review cinematic terms and techniques handout and make connections between read film and reading tests.
Make sure students know their groups and the routine for the film viewing sessions.
Group assignments:

1.
Sound: music, background sounds.
2.
Costumes: sets, makeup and lighting.
3.
Cinematography: camera angles, camera movement, shot selection, shot composition, editing.
4.
Acting: notes movement, vocal dynamics, stress, facial expressions, and subtext.
Homework: Review the list of
cinematic terms and pick at least ten terms which you would use in your assigned roles and familiarize yourself with the definition. When we discuss the film, I want to hear these terms used whenever possible. Write the terms with their definitions and also a list of what your group will be responsible for tracking during our viewing of the movie. Suggestion: Hold an IM session with your group and submit one edited list for everyone. Record and submit your session along with the completed list.
Day 6:Today students should sit in assigned groups to view the film. Explain that each day we'll watch for 30 minutes and they will have the remaining time to pool their notes. While they work I walk around and talk a bit with each group and answer questions. Try to take note of names and relationships.
Handout: Questions to answer for each segment. Each night, get together on IM and answer the questions for the day. Save a copy of the chat and e-mail it to me.
The first scenes are loaded with information and foreshadow much of the events in the movie:
Day 7: Same.
Homework: IM to answer questions for today's session
Day 8: Same as previous two.
Homework: IM questions for all to answer.
Day 9: Break from viewing to do a scene from chap 9--the wedding. Sudents assigned all major character roles and then reanact the wedding scene. This will be fun, and give some good insights. What character is not in this scene?
Day 10: Return to viewing film and discussing the questions.
Day 11: Discuss final assignment. For the final assignment the groups will be reshuffled so each new group has at least one "expert" from each viewing perspective. Students will script and perform a scene from
The Giver. It may be taken from the book or be an original interpretation. Performances may be pantomimed, acted, sung or videotaped. The remaining time will be spent discussing how to do this and making plans.

Final project: Groups will be reshuffled so that each new group has at least one "expert" on each aspect of film design. They will then author and perform a scene of their choosing from The Giver.
Assessment will be based on the performance rubric which can be found at the following
link under the heading of Fine Arts.
