Vladevanian borders with GDC have been always the hazy subject in Scandia's geopolitics. Most of the time they do not have defined markings, while the local residents never bother to register with either authorities when crossing the border mainly for the contraband purposes. The situation in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is even more disturbing one. After the war of independence the Unionist troops have withdrawn from the vast strip of about 1500km long and approximately 200km wide along the south border of Vladevania. While the reasons of their withdrawal remain still unclear, Vladevanian Army and the Vladevanian Armed Guard never enter the zone to establish a presence there. This was caused by the withdraval of Thesian and Montedorian brigades from the conflict which would leave the Vladevanian forces stretched to thin outside the fortified defences of the Princiopality of Rachiv. An exeption was the principality of Kremenets. There a Kossack garrison maintained the stronghold since the begining of the conflict using the body of Slavutych river as a natural defence line against UFUR. Today DMZ remains a shady land that belogs to nobody except the mafia leaders like Mika Dembislav, a Vladevanian born Magor, who believes in his own way of running thing. Having outnumberd and out gunned the miniscule DMZ Gendarme force, Mika and his associates are not much worried about the intervention from within and run they own show. The biggest outbirst of it came with a murder of a Haromszeki businessman Gortix Aquitaine, head of Northern Kraj Forest Products in the town of Sigetul. The man was shot in the broad daylight while sitting in the outdoor restaurant waiting on the local representatives to sign a contract that would create hundreds of jobs for the impverished region. The outraged population of DMZ is protesting in front of every center of the administrative power. Meanwhile the Vladevanian authorities have difficulties trying to patch their own holes in the system all across the country. This has caused for the DMZ activists (78% Magor) to petition to the ambassador of Haromszek to ask for the stabilization force to be sent to the region. More radical ones are rallying for the annexetaion of the land altogether. Yet the official Haromszek is hesitant with answer. Meanwhile shots that are being fired across the DMZ have become a usual thing for the locals just like rain or clouds are. |
