NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

DIRECTED BY COHEN BROTHERS

JOSH BROLIN,TOMMY LEE JONES,JAVIER BARDEM

The best movie of 2007, a briliant movie of revenge and redemption. It starts with a drug deal gone wrong and a missing case of money. This act unleashes a man who is nothing less than a force of nature, of pure violnce who leaves bodies in his wake. Tomy Lee Jones is an older lawman who comes to realize that his time at this game has passed and he is outclassed and unprepared for this new wave of senseless crime and violence. Great script, acting, dialogue.

EASTERN PROMISES

DIRECTED BY DAVID CRONENBERG

VIGGO MORTENSEN,NAOMI WATTS,VINCENT CASSELL

Another excellent movie from Cronenberg, following History Of Violence, a movie about the Russian mafia in London. Naomi Watts is a midwife nurse in a London hospital when a pregnant Russian woman comes in. She dies and Watts finds a diary in Russian, she wants to read it but must get it translated. This act gets her involved in the machinations of a powerful mafia family and their enforcer, Viggo Mortensen.

GONE BABY GONE

DIRECTED BY BEN AFFLECK

One of the best movies of 2007, and a great directorial debut for Ben Affleck, a profound and troubling story of a kidnapped little girl, by the writer of Mystic River, and offers even more questions about the moral choices faced by the people in the movie. In his best performance, Casey Affleck is a private investigator who is looking into the case for the mother. A very good drama that really makes you think about the moral choices taken.

RENDITION

JAKE GYLLANHALL,REESE WITHERSPOON

Rendition is a policy of the American government and the CIA to apprehend people who they suspect as being terrorists, wihout warrant, and shipping them to foreign countries, where thet can be tortured without regard to the Geneva Conventions. This is a very good dramatic depiction of one case, albeit fiction, although it resembles the Arrar case. In fact, the movie was released onlt weeks after he testified before congress by videoconference, as he was still on their no fly list. In the movie, an Arab American is abducted at the Washington airport by the CIA and flown to a middle east country (Syria?) where he is interogated under torture suspected of being part of a local terrorist cell.

LIONS FOR LAMBS

DIRECTED BY ROBERT REDFORD

ROBERT REDFORD,MERYL STREEP,TOM CRUISE

A very good movie about political activism and apathy, and the role of the American government in Afghanistan. Tom Cruise gives a powerful performance as a Republican Senator who forcefully propounds the government policy to newswoman Meryl Streep. The movie shows the lack of understanding and the failure of the policy in Afghanistan, and the failure of the press to hold the government to task for its policies in Iraq, Afghanistan and at home.

DEFINITELY,MAYBE

Ryan Reynolds, Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Derek Luke, Kevin Kline

Ryan Reynolds has to teel his daughter the story of how he met her mother, only, he will tell her about the three women he knew, change all the names and let her guess who it was. The story is then told in retrospective in a linear fashion of his experinces in the 1990’s working for the Clinton campaign in New York. The script is very smart and witty, and the performances are all very good.

ATONEMENT

KEIRA KNIGHTLY,JAMES MCAVOY

One of the better movies of 2007, albeit far from the best, a story of how a lie told by someone who did not realize the implications of what she has done, destroyed the lives of two people. A good drama wth good performances, it drags a bit in the second half, but the ending is very good.

CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR

DIRECTED BY MIKE NICHOLS

TOM HANKS,JULIA ROBERTS,PHILLIP KAUFMAN

Tom Hanks continues his tradition of quality, thoughtful movies in a witty movie about Texas congressman Charles Wilson, and his fascination and obsession with the war in Afghanistan. At the height of the cold war, he saw this as a frontline to confront and defeat the Soviet Union, by arming and supplying the mujahaddin. Aided by a wealthy Texas woman, he forms an unlikely alliance between Pakistan Saudi Arabia and Israel to funnel millions of dollars of weapons to the resistance.

CLOVERFILED

Produced by JJ Abrams, and filmed largely with handheld cameras from the perspective of the people on the ground, it is a new and interesting approach to a monster movie, in this case, a horrific attack on New York.

BLACK BOOK

DIRECTED BY PAUL VERHOEVEN

DUTCH/GERMAN WITH SUBTITLES

One of the best movies of 2007, it is about the Dutch resistance in the last years of the war. Rachel Stein is accompanying her family to the free part of Holland when they are intercepted by the Germans and everyone is killed. She escapes and joins the resistance, agreeing to change her identity and infiltrate the occupation administration. She appears to work for the resistance but is more interested in getting revenge against the SS officer who was reponsible for her family’s murder.

A very good and quirky movie, reminding me of Edmond, about a frustrated man who fanatasizes about killing everyone he works with or blowing up the building, until another frustrated employee comes in one day and does the same thing. The most brilliant performance by Christian Slater.
