28 WEEKS LATER
Sequel to Danny Boyle's better 28 Days Later. Entertaining but lacks the story and good cast of the original.
Will Farrell is great in intelligent comedies like this and Melinda & Melinda. Emma Thompson is great and Maggie Gyllanhaal steals the movie. Very funny.
Hilary Swank's best since her Oscar win. Great true story about a teacher in an ineer city school, very well told, very smart script.
Well done thriller/court room drama with stellar performances from Gosling and Hopkins.
Brilliant, intelligent movie, similar in theme to American Beauty, about desperately unhappy people. Kate Winslett is superb. Very well told, very intelligent movie, great ensemble acting.
Michael Mann returns to his roots with a very entertaining remake, but, the concept is too dated. Why dig out old ideas from the 80's, make a new movie. Still, it is well produced and acted, an entertaining action movie.
Daniel Craig before Bond in a great stylish English gangster film, a la Guy Ritchie. The story is full of twists and turns, and the acting is great.
Maggie Gyllanhaal is amazing in this tough story of a woman just out of prison, trying to put a life together and reconnect with her daughter. Superb acting throughout.
Shooter, with Mark Wahlberg, is a well done action movie, albeit a poor version of the book on which it is based - Point Of Impact.
The first of 3 movies by Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonz. A multi layered story that defies explanation. Superb acting.
Another Spike Jonz movie, Jim Carrey wants to wipe all memories of Kate Winslett from his mind.
One of the most unusual and novel movies - John Cusack finds a portal into John Malcovich's mind. Great cast and story.
From the director of Babel, a story of tragedy, revenge and redemption. Very good story and great acting.
Incredible drama of selfishness, self destruction and pride. Great story and acting.
Clint Eastwood directs a brilliant story about 3 friends whose lives are marked by tragedy. Sean Penn and Tim Robbins are especially good.

A MIGHTY HEART

Angelina Jolie, Dan Futterman

Directed by Michael Winterbottom

The best movie of 2007 to date, it is the story of the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street journalist, Daniel Pearl, by Islamic extremists. The performance by Angelina Jolie is the finest of her career. The story is superbly told in almost a documentary style or a procedural as she, the US embassy, the FBI and Pakistani security officials race against time to secure his release.
KNOCKED UP

Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl

The best comedy of 2007, directed by Judd Apatow, who made The 40 Year Old Virgin. A very smart, witty, raunchy comedy.

THE LIVES OF OTHERS
GERMAN (SUBTITLED)

A story about life in East Germany in the early 1980's, the oppressive nature of the government and how the secret police, The Stasi, monitored the lives of just about every citizen.
Most affected were artists, who were censored and prevented from expressing any political ideas.

This story centers on one Stasi agent who has been tasked to monitor a playwright who is considered very pro socialism and pro GDR, and find evidence of his wrongdoing. He becomes too involved in the lives of his suspect and his firends, and discovers some very unsettling truths.
THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM
Directed by Paul Greenblass
Starring: Matt Damon, Joan Allen, Julia Stiles, David Straithorn

Very good action movie, better than 2, as good as the first, paced with break neck speed, non stop action. Very good performance from Matt Damon.
THE QUEEN

Directed by Stephen Frears

Starring: Helen Mirren, James Cromwell

A very good film covering the period around Tony Blair's election and the week of Diana Spencers death. The story is really the dysfunction of the royal family and the refusal to acknowledge what was going on in the country. It is primarily a character study of the principals involved, and Mirren's performance, Oscar winning, is amazing.
