Class 47s that visited the Highlands on a non-regular diagram.
While the Brush Class 47s have been allocated to work off Inverness for a number of years now, there were the odd occasions when visitors made a rare appearance on trains around the Highlands. These locos range from no-heat 47/3s to the 47/4s with extended fuel tanks, otherwise known as the 47/8s.
Left: In fairly driech weather, 47328 passes through Nairn on the way back from Roseisle with a trainload of empties grain hoppers. This is not the only visit a 47/3 has made it up to the highlands, 47331-the last 47 in Civil Engineers livery- made it up in 1998 not long before being withdrawn. Photo by Douglas Low
Right: Not long before being moved to Old Oak Common for duties with Network SouthEast, 47702 was captured working out of Inverness shortly after being repainted into the NSE house colours. Photographed by Peter Cresswell on 31/08/90.
Left: Definately a long way from home, 47801 is seen preparing to leave with an anglo-scottish southbound train on 01/09/90. What is noteable is that the loco, at the time, was allocated to Bristol Bath Road and therefore was not a regular at that time. As 551, it had been allocated to Eastfield between 87 and 89 so probably did pay a visit to the Highlands at some point. Photo by Peter Cresswell.
