Ministry of Magic Classifcations

The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures give classfications to all beasts, spirits, and beings. These provide the dangerousness of a creature, which are shown as follows:

XXXXX - Known wizard killer / Impossible to domesticate or train
XXXX - Dangerous / Requires sepcialist knowledge / Skilled wizard may handle
XXX - Competent wizard should cope
XX - Harmless/ May be domesticated
X - Boring

The creatures shown below can all be found in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," where their ratings are given.

Acromantula
M.O.M. Classifcation XXXXX
A monsterous eight-eyed spider capable of human speech.


Antipodean Opaleye Dragon
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
The Opaleye is a native of New Zealand. It dwells in valleys, it is a medium size, between two and three tonnes. It is the most beautiful type of dragon, it has iridescent pearly scales and glittering, multi-colored, pupil less eyes.


Ashwinder
M.O.M. Classification XXX
It is created when a magical fire is allowed to burn unchecked for too long. It is a thin pale, grey serpent with glowing red eyes, it rises from the embers of an unsupervised fire, and will slither away into the shadows.


Augurey
M.O.M. Classifcation XX
Augurey is a native of Britain and Ireland, though it can be found sometimes in northern Europe. It is a thin mournful looking bird, somewhat like a small underfed vulture in appearance. It is greenish black, and the feathers are useless as quills because they repel ink.


Basilisk
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
A Basilisk is a green serpent that may reach fifty feet in lenght. A Basilisk is born with a chicken egg hatched beneath a toad.


Billywig
M.O.M. Classification XXX
A Billywig is around half an inch long and a vivid sapphire blue, though it's speed is such that it is rarely noticed by Muggles, and often not seen by wizards until stung. Dried Billywig stings are believed to be a component in the popular sweet Fizzing Whizzbees.


Bowtruckle
M.O.M. Classification XX
A Bowtruckle is a tree gaurdian creature found mainly in the west of England, southern Germany, and certain Scandinavian forests. It is immensely difficult to spot, being a small, maximum eight inches in height, and apparently made of bark and twigs with two small brown eyes.


Bundimun
M.O.M. Classification XXX
Bundimun's are found worldwide. They are skilled at creeping under floorboards and behind skirting boards, they infest houses. They resemble a patch of greenish fungus with eyes, though when alarmed it will scuttle away on its numerous spindly legs.


Centaur
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
Centuars have a human head, torso and arms joined to a horse's body which may be of any several colors. Being intelligent and capable of speech, it should not strickly be classified as a beast. They are generally speaking as mistrusted of wizards as they are of Muggles and indeed seem to make little differentiation between us. They live in herds ranging from ten to fifty members.


Chimaera
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
The Chimaera is a rare Greek monster with a lion's head, goat's body and a dragon's tail. The Chimaera is extremely dangerous, vicious, and blood thirsty.


Chinese Fireball Dragon
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
The only Oriental dragon, it has scarlet smooth scaled, it has a fringe of golden spikes around its snub snouted face and extremely protuberant eyes.


Chizpurfle
M.O.M. Classification XX
Chizpurfles are small parasites up to a twentieth of an inch high. Their appearance is crab like with large fangs. They are attrachted to magic and may infest the fur and feathers of such creatures as Crups and Augreys.


Clabbert
M.O.M. Classification XX
A Clabbert is a tree dwelling creature, in appearance it looks something like a cross between a monkey and a frog. It has smooth, mottled green, hairless skin. The hands and the feet are webbed, the arms and the legs are long and supple, enabling the Clabbert to swing between branches.


Common Welsh Green Dragon

The Welsh Green has an easily recognisable and surprisingly melodious roar. The Welsh Green blends wel with the luss grass of its homeland, though it nests in the higher mountains.


Crup
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Crup is originated in the southeast of England. It closely resembles a Jack Russel terrier, except for the forked tail. The Crup is almost certainly a wizard created dog, it is intensely loyal to wizards and ferocious towards Muggles.


Demiguise
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Demiguise is found in the far East though with great diffuculty for this beast is able to make itself inivisble when threatened and can only be seen by wizards skilled in its capture.


Diricawl
M.O.M. Classification XX
The Diricawl originated in Mauritius. It is a plump bodied, fluffy feathered, flightless bird, the Diricawlis remarkable for its method of escaping danger. It can vanish in a puff of feathers and reappear elsewhere.


Doxy
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Doxy is often mistaken for a fairy, but they are quite a different species. Though like the fairy it has a minute human form, though in the Doxy's case this is covered in thick black hair and has an extra pair of arms and legs. The Doxy's wings are thick, curved and shiny, much like a beetle's.


Dragon

The most famous of all magical beasts are the dragons. There are ten breeds of dragons, though these havce been known to interbred on occasion, producing rare hybrids. Pure bred dragons are as follows:

Dugbog
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Dugbog is a marsh dwelling creature found in Europe and North and South America. It resembles a piece of dead wood while stationary, though closer examination will reveal finned paws and very sharp teeth.


Erkling
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Erkling is an elfish creature which originated in the Black Forest in Germany. It is larger than a gnome, three feet high on average, with a pointed face and a high pitched cackle that is particularly entrancing to children.


Erumpent
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Erumpent is a large grey African beast of great power. Weighing up to a tonne, it may be sometimes mistaken for a rhinoceros at a distance. It has thick hide that repels most charms and curses, a large, sharp horn upon its nose and a long rope like tail.


Fairy
M.O.M. Classification XX
The fairy is a small and decorative beast of little intelligence. Often used and conjured by wizards for decoration, the fairy generally inhabits woodlands or glades. Ranging height from one to five inches, the fairy has a minute humanoid body, head and limbs but sports large insect like wings.


Fire Crab
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Fire Crab greatly resembles a large tortoise with a heavily jewelled shell. The Fire Crab does have its own defence mechanism, it shoots flames from its rear end when attacked. Fire Crabs are exported as pets but a special licence is neccessary.


Flobberworm
M.O.M. Classification X
The Flobberworn lives in damp ditches. A thick brown worm reaching up to ten inches in lenght, the Flobberworm moves very little. The Flobberworm's preferred food is lettuce.


Fwooper
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Fwooper is an African bird with extremely vivid plumage. They may be orange, pink, lime green, or yellow. The Fwooper's song enjoyable at first will drive the listener to insanity.


Ghoul
M.O.M. Classification XX
The Ghoul though ugly, is not a dangerous creature. It resembles a somewhat slimy, buck toothed ogre and generally resides in attics or barns belonging to wizards, where it eats spiders and moths. It moans and occasionaly throws objects around but it is essentially simple minded and will, at worst growl alarmingly at anyone who stumbles across it.


Glumbumble
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Glumbumble is a grey, furry bodied flying insect that produces melancholy inducing treacle, which is used as an antidote to the hysteria produced by eating Alihotsy leaves.


Gnome
M.O.M. Classification XX
The Gnome is a common garden pest found throughout northern Europe and North America. It may reach a foot in height with a disproportionately large head and hard bony feet.


Graphorn
M.o.M. Classification XXXX
The Graphorn is a large greyish purple with a humped back, it has two long, sharp horns, and walks on large four thumbed feet.


Griffin
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Griffin originated in Greece and has front legs and a head of a giant eagle, but the body and hind legs of a lion. Like Sphinxes, Griffins are often employed by wizards to guard treasure.


Grindylow
M.O.M. Classification XX
The Grindylow is a horned, pale green water demon. It is found in lakes throughout Britian and Ireland. It feeds on small fish and is aggressive towards wizards and Muggles.


Hebridean Black Dragon
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
The Hebridean Dragon is up to thirty feet in lenght, it is a rough scaled, with brilliant purple eyes and a line of shallow but razor sharp ridges along its back.


Hippocampus
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Hippocampus has the head and forequarters of a horse and the tail and hindquarters of a giant fish. It lays large, semi-transparent eggs through which the Tadfoal may be seen.


Hippogriff
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Hippogriff has a head of a giant eagle and the body of a horse. Eye contact should be maintained when approchaing a Hippogriff.


Horklump
M.O.M. Classifications X
The Horklump comes from Scandinavia, it resembles a fleshy, pinkish mushroom covered in sparse, wiry black bristles. A prodigious breeder, the Horklump will cover an average garden in matter of days.


Hungarian Horntail Dragon
M.o.M. Classification XXXXX
The Hungarian Horntail is the most dangerous of all dragon breeds. It has black scales and is lizard like in appearance. It has yellow eyes, bronze horns and similarly colored spikes that protrude from its long tail


Inferius
M.o.M Claaification: Unknown - Very Dangerous
An Inferius is an animated dead body, controlled and bewitched by Dark magic. It is commanded to do the bidding of the wizard who is controlling it. An inferius is not alive in any way, but merely acts as a puppet, acting out the instructions that it is given mindlessly. Voldemort killed so many people during the first war that he constructed a whole army of Inferi. Since they have no choice or mind, they are ruthless when ordered to attack, but they have a crucial weakness. An inferius fears fire and warmth and can be fought very effectively in this way.

Imp
M.O.M. Classification XX
The Imp is sometimes confused with the Pixie. The Imp cannot fly, and they are not very vivid in color. Imps eat small insects and have breeding habits much like the faries.


Jarvey
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Jarvey resembles an overgrown ferret, though it can talk. Jarveys confine to short, though rude conversations. They live mostly below ground where they pursue Gnomes.


Jobberknoll
M.O.M. Classification XX
The Jobberknoll is a speckled bird which eats small insects. It makes no sound until the moment of its death, which it lets out a long scream made up of every sound it has every heard, regurgitated backwards.


Kappa
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Kappa is a Japanese water demon, that inhabits shallow ponds and rivers. It is often said it looks like a monkey with fish scales instead of fur. It has a hollow in the top of its head in which it carries water.


Kelpie
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Kelpie is a water demon and can take various shapes. It often appears as a horse with bulrushes for a mane. It will lure the unwary on its back and dive to the bottom of the river or lake and eat the rider.


Knarl
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Knarl is usually mistaken for a hedgehog by Muggles. When there is food left out on the garden the Knarl thinks its a trap and will savage the garden plants or ornaments.


Kneazle
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Kneazle is a small cat like creature with flecked, speckled or spotted fur, outsize ears and a tail like a lion's. The Kneazle has an uncanny ability to detect unsavoury or suspicious characters.


Leprechaun
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Leprechuan found only in Ireland it achieves a height of up to six inches and is green in color. They can speak and they live mostly in forest and woodland areas.


Lethifold
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
The Lethifold is a rare creature found in tropical climates. It resembles a black cloak perhaps half an inch thick which glides along the ground at night. It attacks the sleeping, they suffocate their victim, and digests them.


Lobalug
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Lobalug is found at the bottom of the North Sea. It is a simple creature, ten inches long, comprising a rubbery spout and a venom sac. Merpeople use the Lobalug as a weapon.


Mackled Malaclaw
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Malaclaw is a land dwelliung creature found mostly on rocky coastlines around Europe. It resembles a lobster, but it should on no account be eaten as its flesh is unfit for human comsumption and will result in a high fever and an unsightly greenish rash.


Manticore
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
The Manticore is a highly dangerous Greek beast with the head of a man, the body of a lion and the tail of a scorpion. The Manticore skin repels almost all known charms and the sting causes instant death.


Merpeople
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
Merpeople are also known as Sirens, Selkies and Merrows. The Selkies of Scotland and the Merrows of Ireland are less beutiful than in Greece but they all share the love of music which is common to all merpeople.


Moke
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Moke is a silver green lizard reaching up to ten inches in lenght and is found throughout Britian and Ireland. It has the ability to shrink at will and has consequently never been noticed by Muggles.


Mooncalf
M.O.M. Classification XX
The Mooncalf is an intensely shy creature that emerges from its burrow only at the full moon. Its body is smooth and pale grey, it has bulging round eyes on top of its head and four spindly legs with enormous flat feet.


Murtlap
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Murtlap is a rat like creature, it resembles a sea anemone. It is found in coastal areas of Britian.


Niffler
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Niffler is gentle and even affectionate it can be destructive to belongings and should never be kept in houses.


Nogtail
M.O.M. Classification XXX
Nogtails are demons found in rural areas right across Europe, Russia and America. They resemble piglets with long legs, thick, stubby tails and narrow black eyes.


Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
The Norwegian Ridgeback resembles the Horntail in most respects, though instead of tail spikes it sports particularly prominent jet black ridges along its back. The Ridgeback is nowadays a rare dragon breed.


Nundu
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
This east African beast is arguably the most dangerous in the world. A gigantic leopard that moves silently despite its size and whose breath causes virulent enough to eliminate entire villages.


Occamy
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Occamy is a plumed, two legged winged creature with a serpentine body. The Occamy may reach a lenght of fifteen feet. It is aggresive to all who approach it.


Peruvian Vipertooth Dragon
M.O.M. classification XXXXX
The Vipertooth is the smallest of all known dragons. It is a mere fifteen feet or so in lenght, it is smooth sclaed and copper colored with black ridge markings.


Pheonix
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Pheonix is a magnificent, swan sized, scarlet bird with a long golden tail, beak and talons. The Pheonis lives to an immense age as it can regenerate, bursting into flames when it s body begins to fail and rising again from the ashes as a chick.


Pixie
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Pixie is blue in color and is up to eight inches in height and very mishcievous. They are wingless but they can fly and has been knwon to seize unwary humans by the ears and deposit them at the top of tall trees and buildings.


Plimpy
M.O.M. Classification XX
The Porlock is a horse guardian, they are covered in shaggy fur, and a large nose. They live to guard horses they can be found curled in the straw of stables or else shelting in the midst of the herd it protects.


Puffskein
M.O.M. Classification XX
Puffskein are spherical in shapre and covered in soft, custard colored fur. From time to time a very long pink tongue will emerge from the Puffskein and snake through the house searching for food.


Quintaped
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
Quintaped has a low slung body and is covered with thick reddish brown hair, as are its five legs, each of which ends in a clubfoot.


Ramora
M.O.M. Clasification XX
A Ramora is a silver fish found in the Indian Ocean. It is a gaurdian of seafarers, and it can anchor ships.


Red Cap
M.O.M. Classification XXX
These are dwarf like creatures and they live in holes on old battlegrounds or wherever human blood has been spilled.


Re'em
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
They are extremely rare giant oxen with golden hides, they are found in the wilds of North America and the Far East. The blood gives the drinker immense strength.


Romanian Longhorn Dragon
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
The Longhorn has dark green scales and long glittering golden horns with which it gores its prey before roasting it.


Runespoor
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
Runespoor is a three headed serpent, it commonly reaches a length of six or seven feet. Livid orange with black stripes, it is easy to spot. Each of the heads serve a different purpose. The left head is the planning head, the middle is the dreamer, and the right is the critic.


Salamander
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Salamander is a small fire dwelling lizard that feeds on flame. They are white, and it appears blue or scarlet depending upon the heat of the fire.


Sea Serpent
M.O.M. Classification XXX
Sea Serpents have an alarming appearance though they are not known to kill humans. Reaching lenghts of up to hundred feet, the Sea Serpent has a horse like head and a long snake like body.


Shrake
M.O.M. Classification XXX
A Shrake is a fish covered entirely in spines and found in the Atlantic Ocean.


Snidget
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Golden Snidget is an extremely rare, protected species of bird. They are completely round, with a very long thin beak and glistening, jewel like red eyes, it is an extremely fast flier.


Sphinx
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Egyptian sphinx has a human head on a lion's body. It has been used for over thousands of years by witches and wizards to guard valuables and secret hidaways. They love puzzles and riddles.


Streeler
M.O.M. Classification XXX
The Streeler is a giant snail that changes color on an hourly basis. It is kept as a pet by those who enjoy its kaleidoscopic color changes, and its venom is one of the few substances known to kill Horklumps.


Swedish Short-Snout Dragon
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
The short Snout is an attractive silvery blue dragon whose skin is sought after for the manufacture of protective gloves and hide.


Tebo
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Tebo is an ash colored warthog found in Congo and Zaire. It has the power of invisibility, making it difficult to evade or catch.


Troll
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Troll is a fearsome creature up to twelve feet tall and weighing over a tonne. Troll converse in grunts and some have been known to understand some simple human words.


Ukrainian Ironbelly Dragon
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
The largest breed of dragon. It can acheive the weight of six tonnes. The scales are metallic grey, the eyes deep red and the talons particularly long and vicious.


Unicorn
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The unicorn is a beautiful beast found throughout the forests of northern Europe. It is a pure white, horned horse when fully grown, though foals are initially golden then turn silver when fully grown.


Werewolf
M.O.M. Classification XXXXX
The Werewolf is only dangerous when transformed. When there is no full moon the Werewolf is about as harmless as any other human. Humans only turn into Werewolves when bitten by one.


Winged Horse
M.O.M. Classification XX - XXXX
There are many different breeds of Winged Horses the Abraxan, the Aethonan, the Granian, and the Thestral. The Hippogriff is also a part of this catagorey.


Yeti
M.O.M. Classification XXXX
The Yeti, also knwon as Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman. The Yeti is believed to be related to the Troll, though no one has gotten close enough to conduct tests. Up to fifteen feet in height it is covered head to foot in the purest white hair.
