"Welcome Illinois Highland Park High
School Band"
Thursday:
This was an easy day -- shopping, the Yu Gardens, and a boat cruise.
The
Shanghai skyline is beautiful ... but not as nice as Chicago's.
Wednesday:
We had two exchange concerts -- at the Shanghai Music High School
and the
Children's Palace. It is wonderful seeing the way the kids have interacted
with
the Chinese students, which has been a tremendous experience for
everyone. On
another note, they are also learning terrific bargaining
skills and have single-handedly
overhauled the economy of China. So don't
expect any of those traveler's checks to be
coming home.
If
it's Tuesday, this must be Shanghai: Shanghai is a beautiful, modern,
and very
cosmopolitan city -- very European as well as Chinese. We visited
the Shanghai Art
Museum, where the most famous exhibit was Barbra Streisand,
vacationing in
Shanghai. (Unfortunately, they didn't take a photo of her
for the site.) We also saw a
Chinese Acrobatics show, which was
spectacular.

Monday
News: China is great! We climbed the Great Wall and it was awesome.
The
view from up there is spectacular.
Sunday
News: Today we visited the Temple of Heaven, which was incredible. Then
the band
played magnificently at the Jin Fan Concert Hall in Beijing. The group is
tired
but having a fabulous time.
Saturday
News: We had a wonderful sunny mid 60's day at the Forbidden City -- a
spectacular site. We were "assaulted" by street vendors
afterwards, but got some
good deals. We had lunch at a beautiful park by a
lake (like Lincoln Park's Bauer Cafe,
but with Chinese architecture). Had
an exchange concert at Yu Ying High School
where we listened to a performance
from their Chinese music band and performed our
set -- the Percussion Ensemble
debuted Stick Schtick, too. Our students were warmly
received by the
students there, gifts and e-mail addresses were exchanged. After the
concerts, the students played an impromptu game of basketball outside just
before
boarding the buses. Dinner was hosted by the Soong Ching Ling
Foundation -- with
Peking Duck as the specialty main course.
Friday
News: Dinner was wonderful. After a good night's
sleep, the group went off
to
explore The Forbidden City.
