September Assignment:

Section 1: The following passages are descriptions of several important characters. Worth 4 points per character.

“A giant of a man was standing in the doorway. His face was almost completely hidden by a long, shaggy mane or hair and a wild, tangled beard, but you could make out his eyes, glinting like black beetles under all the hair.

The giant squeezed his way into the hut, stooping so that his head just brushed the ceiling.”

“In the back of the shop, a boy with a pale, pointed face was standing on a footstool while a second witch pinned up his black robes.”

“Malfoy who had a pale, pointed, sneering face, was in Slytherin House; he played Seeker on the Slytherin Quidditch team, the same position that Harry played on the Gryffindor team. Crabbed and Goyle seemed to exist to do Mafloy’s bidding. They were both wide and musclely; Crabbe was taller, with a pudding-bowl haircut and very thick neck; Goyle had short, bristly hair and long, gorilla-ish arms.”

“Black’s gaunt face broke into the first true smile Harry had seen upon it. The difference it made was startling, as though a person ten years younger were shining through the starved mask; for a moment he was recognizable as the man who had laughed at Harry’s parent’s wedding.”

Identify words and phrases that create imagery for the following characters and answer the following questions for each. How do you think Rowling feels about the characters? Do you get the same feeling?
1. Rubeus Hagrid
2. Draco Malfoy
3. Crabbe and Goye
4. Sirius Black

Section 2: Combining the skills. Worth 13 points at most.

“For a second that contained an eternity, Harry stared into Cedric’s face, at his open gray eyes, blank and expressionless as the windows of a deserted house, at the half-open mouth, which looked slightly surprised. And then before Harry’s mind and accepted what he was seeing, before he could feel anything by numb disbelief, he felt himself being pulled to his feet.”

5. Read the above excerpt from “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” This text depicts Cedric’s death. In complete sentences identity important uses of diction, similes, and imagery.
