SABRINA THE ANIMATED SERIES
1999-2000
ABC/UPN
In the mid-1990's, Archie Comics teamed up with Viacom to produce a live-action version of Sabrina, titled Sabrina The Teenage Witch (not to be confused with the 1971 animated Filmation show of the same name).  It was to star Melissa Joan Hart (of Clarissa Explains It All fame) as Sabrina.  It just went off the air.  I cover this program in the live-action section.

But in 1999, Archie Comics decided to launch a new animated Sabrina series to supplement the live-action show for Saturday Mornings.  Once again working with DiC, Melissa Joan Hart's company Hartbreak Films (who also produces the live-action show), and Savage Studios, they came up with
Sabrina The Animated Series. Melissa also does voices on this show, but only as the aunts Hilda and Zelda.  Her sister, Emily, portrays Sabrina in this series.  On this show, Sabrina is still in her pre-teens and hasn't developed her powers yet (Kind of reminiscent of The New Archies, isn't it?).  She  and her aunts stay with this old guy named Uncle Quigley who has a cookie jar called the Spooky Jar that's filled with spells.  Sabrina each week takes a spell out of the jar that gets her into hot water.  This show also was a hit.

TRIVIA: The aunts are much more good-looking on this show than their old comic book and Filmation counterparts.  In fact, after the live-action Sabrina series aired, Archie Comics relaunched the Sabrina comic books and the aunts stopped looking like witches and started looking like regular ladies.  UPDATE (4/02/2007): Sabrina The Animated Series has returned to Saturday Mornings as of October 2006 as part of KOL Secret Slumber Party, a joint venture between DiC Entertainment, AOL, and CBS, making this the first time since 1976 that an Archie-related program graced the CBS airwaves.  KOL has recently been renamed Kewlopolis and is still on CBS.
