This poem, like all my poems, can be interpreted in many different ways--all of them being "right". It's simply the way that poem hits you on that particular day. What the poem means to me, and what it means to someone else is always totally different. So, here's a little bit of background on the poem, and my thoughts on it.

This poem was actually written for a friend, who wanted me to write a poem about having a secret crush. I always write the poem before the title, so I'll explain the poem before the title. I liked using the lit candle references in the poem, because really, if you think about it, crushes are like that... Anything--even a tiny amount of "wind"--can blow them out. So, in this interpretation, a girl lights a candle, and watches by her crush's door. She hopes he likes her too (whisp'ring fantasies), and hopes he won't crush her dreams (Praying he won't blow the candle out). Now, about the title. People usually call boyfriends, girlfriends, crushes, etc. "flames," which is where the title comes from. It's a twofold reference to the candle and the crush.

However, this is only one way to look at it. Another person who read the poem said that it seemed like the person's whole life to them--the door is an opening to his mind, and he--not the other person in the poem--is whispering the fantasies and dreams of the future. Then, it goes back to the first person in the poem, hoping he doesn't ruin his life--in other words, blow his own candle out.

These are only two ways of looking at this poem. If you have an interpretation of this poem you'd like to share with me, please email me at:
