| When Dogs first come here |
||||
| First off, I have a husband who i have to give credit too.If it wasnt for his patience,none of these dogs would have a place,a couch,a pillow or simply a lap to lay on. Onto when a dog comes into our home.~~~~~ We like to give the dog atleast a 2wk adjustment period.This is getting to know them,them settling in and usually by the 15th day(not always now) we can see what they may be like.In this time we watch them.See how they intereact with the kids thru the baby gate or simply with the kids walking by thier crates.We watch thier behavior with the other dogs. Are they dominate with any dogs?Or can they co exist.ANd there will be dogs who dont like others,just like people. Hounds are pack animals.they hunt together and in general should tolerate one another. We put them on a schedule.If we have alot of,we have night shift dogs and day shift.At some point everyone gets to come in. Morning shift dogs go out for the most part of the day.They come in the afternoon when the night shift dogs go out. Hounds do require alot of exercise,and without it they will find ways to entertian themselves and in ways you may not like *G* So,they come here,hang for 2 wks,have a vet go over them,we give our own 5 way shots,rabies done by a vet,we worm them and take care of any other medical needs they may need. We do crate them.ALL dogs are fed seperately.Hounds are notorous for being food aggressive towards one another.They are fed 2x a day.Most get fed Purina food,theres a few with allergy problems and we feed Wellness. Due to small kids in the household,the dogs are not around us while we eat.My kids find too much entertainment in feeding their dinner to the dogs *G* There may be somethings we allow the dogs to do here that you may not like.If so,you need to be willing to allow the dog to adjust to your schedule/needs. We highly recommend obeidence training.Not all dogs are created perfect and a trained dog makes for a happy household. :-) Now,what behavior I see here may not be the same in another household.In this house the dogs know I am ALPHA,and do not cross that line with me.Sometimes dogs know how to take advantge of thier humans.SO what I see here may be different in a new setting(and this goes with ANY breed of dog).You need to be willing to commit to take the time in working with the dogs if problems arise. More to come.............. |
