Chapter 3
The pair remained in the smokers lounge, chatting about anything and everything for over an hour. The topics had ranged from photography to technology, movies to books. She told him she was allergic to shellfish, he told her he was allergic to chocolate. She was stunned to find out he couldnt eat chocolate. Katrina joked that she didnt know it was possible to live without it. It was practically a staple food to her. So much for that fantasy of him licking chocolate sauce off my body, she thought. She shocked herself with that one, and had to make a conscious effort to erase the mental picture that had quickly and efficiently burned itself into her brain. The poor guy, he seems so sweet, and here I am thinking about himthat way She quickly changed the subject. Back to photographyI remember seeing some pictures of you with a camera in your hand. You had your pants rolled up, standing on a stool. You were taking pictures of some model. What was that all about? she inquired. She had always been curious about those photos, especially since she was a rather talented amateur photographer herself. Oh, yeahhuh, I just grabbed the camera away from the dude that day. I was having fun. I love to take pictures. Problem is, Im usually on the wrong side of the lens. He laughed. Hell, we got people snapping pics of us all the friggin time, he said, making camera shutter sounds with his mouth. But I think its way cooler to actually create an image, and get it exactly perfect. From the mind, to the eye, to the film. Thats so cool to me. Katrina agreed. She liked to take pictures of architecture. There was something about the sharp, clean lines of buildings, all that geometry that inspired her. Occasionally, if she had the right subject, she took astonishingly good pictures of people, even though she didnt really care for portrait photography. However, she thought she would very much like to photograph Alex. He had such striking features. And those eyes. She decided she had never seen anything so sultry in her entire life.
She also admitted to herself that she had developed some notions about him that were turning out to be false. He was much smarter than she had anticipated. He had quite a large vocabulary, and didnt seem to be afraid to use big words. This impressed her. He didnt seem to be the snobby celebrity party animal that she had expected, either. He had normal likes and dislikes, and was, to her surprise, a pretty normal guy. Except for the fact that he was unbelievably HOT. She was saddened to think that their time together would soon be coming to and end. That thought was rudely punctuated by the sound of his ringing cell phone. Yo, wassup? he answered, plugged his other ear with his finger, then listened intently to the caller. So Nicky made it? Cool. He continued to listen. Katrina assumed he was talking to Kevin. OK, soyoull be cool if I take off? Katrinas heart sank. She didnt want him to leave. Ill stop by firstbe there in a few. He flipped his phone shut and turned to Katrina. Listen, I gotta go back inside and say bye to Kevin. Nick finally made it so he doesnt really need me to stick around. I just stopped by as a favor, so I can take off now. Katrina hung her head slightly, but tried valiantly not to look too obviously disappointed. Thats OK, I understand she said, feeling hot tears beginning to well up in her eyes. She had to fight this. She needed to be grateful for the time they had already spent together. So, lets go tell Kevin were outta here. We can go get something to eat. Im starving, he said. Her heart skipped a beat. He was inviting her to go with him. Oh, this was big. This was HUGE.
