A Novel Idea
Copyright 2001
Shauna separated from the party that evening figuring nobody would ever notice she was gone. Her indentation firm in the couch of the den in Howie's home, she didn't even realize anyone was peering over her shoulder into the notebook of ideas for the book she planned to write someday."You are just so focused my dear," he startled her back into reality. He swung around the couch and kneeled down next ot her."What'cha doing?"he inquired with the eagerness of a child.
"Nothing you need to be sticking your nose into,"she smiled.
"Are ya sure about that? I mean maybe I could help you with something there."
"I'm sure, but thanks for the offer anyway."
"Aren't you having any fun tonight?"
"Why?"she held onto the notebook still opened.
"Because whatever you're writing about in that notebook is obviously more entertaining than any of us tonight."
"Not true. I just had an idea, so I decided to write it down before I forgot it."
"Ah yes, the Great American Novel you're planning to write someday. Let me see."
"No,"she now held onto it tightly.
"Is there something I shouldn't be seeing in there?"
"NO,"she blushed at his remark.
"Ah, but there is. C'mon. Let me see it,"his curiosity about to kill him.
"No,"she refused to let go.
"Fine. You know where I am if you change your mind,"he pouted making his exit from the room. Just when she thought it was safe, he reached over and ripped it from her hands.
"I'm gonna get you Dorough,"she glared as he started to read the lines out loud.
"Fingers trembling, she fumbled through the remaining buttons of his basic white shirt. Her eyes met his timidly as he softly uttered,"We have all night." He took her deep into his arm and softly pressed against her lips assuring her that she was his and would only ever be his."
She snatched the notebook away from him.
"Women actually read that stuff and get swept away by it?"he smirked.
"Some even make millions by writing it,"she snidely returned, embarrassed by the situation.
"You're embarrassed. That's so sweet."
"Don't think it has anything to do with you either."
"Of course not,"he smiled knowingly that it was."Then who?"he noticed her attempt to escape and grabbed her by the arm.
"Somebody from long ago,"she made no attempt to escape.
"Too bad,"he loosened his grip on her arm noticing she wasn't going anywhere."He must have forgotten how well he treated you."
"It's actually the way she wanted him to treat her,"she shyly returned.
"Really now,"he pulled her to him, closing the space between them. Her notebook dropped to the floor."Why did this guy treat her so badly?"he inquired now eye to eye with the sky blueness of hers.
"Maybe he was in love with her and just didn't know it,"wishing now he would just kiss her already.
"Hardly seems like a guy you'd wanna keep around,"he continued the charade just a little longer.
"Oh, I don't know. Sometimes,he's actually pretty good to me,"she followed his lead.
"Then why don't you kiss him already?"
"Then what would I write about?"she teased.
"Oh, I can give you something to write about,"his mouth swiftly covered hers as his hands hungrily discovered her body. They were friends and she knew she shouldn't be reacting to him this way. What gave him the right to make her feel like he just lit a fire under her and leaving it to slowly burn? When he drew away from her, she hesitated in the thought of continuing."Second thoughts?"
"Yes."
He closed the door and drew the curtains on the window slowly making his approach to where she was leaning on the shiny maple desk at the head of the room."We've got the rest of our lives to worry about that."
"What about the rest of the party? Won't somebody be looking for you?"
"Probably,"his fingertips traced lightly up her sun bronzed arm."What is it that you're really worried about?"he trapped her between himself and the desk.
"I...I...I.."she stuttered as she felt his breath hot on her shoulder drawing the strings of her light pink sundress away from her shoulders, inhaling the soft powdery scent covering her skin. His eyes came up to meet hers for a response his question.
"Well?"
She was debating her answer, still breathless from the intensity he was causing her body to feel when they were interrupted by a knock on the door. "Don't,"he whispered heatedly into her ear brushing the auburn softness away. When their visitor received no response, they left. He returned to her face catching the reaction he had cause by his most recent one."You don't have any good reason not to, do you?"
"I can give you fifty good reasons outside that door why we shouldn't continue."
"You're so afraid of what people are gonna think that you never let yourself go."
