Chapter 2
"Tell me something Howie,"AJ approached him that evening at the party he was throwing two weeks later. "What?" "Susan's been throwing around some pretty nasty rumors about Tammy and some of them are even involving me. Why would you do that to her?" "Are you looking at the source it came from AJ? I would never do that to her. She's all of a sudden got it in for me since I broke up with her." "She also told me that she caught you and Tam in the act a couple of weeks ago." "What act AJ? Tammy and I fell asleep watching a movie and she was still there when Susan arrived. We were having a pillow fight with the pillows from my couch. You were actually gonna take her word over mine. Some friend,"he left AJ alone. "What was that all about?"Brian noticed the argument that had taken place. "He got all defensive about Tamara. She was there at his place one morning a couple of weeks ago and Susan said they slept together. He said they fell asleep on the couch." "Why couldn't that be possible?" "Anything's possible with those two anymore." "If you believe anything Susan says it makes you just as bad as she is by saying it." "Alright man. But it does make you wonder doesn't it? I mean he got real defensive and all. Something's going on there." "Whatever,"Brian left him. "Excuse me Susan. We need to talk,"he led her away from her admiring crowd outside by the pool where they didn't have to yell over the music. "What's so important you had to bring me out here?" "Whatever it is you're saying about Tammy and I had better stop soon." "What in the world are you talking about?" "Don't play stupid with me. You do that easily enough to the rest of the world." "Look Howie, sometimes you get burned. How does it feel?" "Until I met Tammy, none of my female friends were a real threat to you. You just wanted it to seem that way. Tammy seems to be some sort of threat to you." "Tammy a threat? Please!"Susan rolled her eyes. "She is. You couldn't handle the fact that she and I are just as close as you and I once were." "Now you're being ridiculous." "You can't deal with the fact that somebody dumped you before you got to them." "Now I know you're telling tales." "Back off Susan." "And if I don't?"she challenged. "I don't have time to deal with your high school antics. She's never been nothing but nice to you until now. Lay off. It's a wonder I stayed with you this long,"he returned to the party leaving Susan in a state of disbelief. How dare he.
Tamara arrived at the party and tried to approach some of her friends but every time she did, they made an excuse not to be near her. She found Howie comfortably indented into the couch and sat down next to him."What's going on?" "Hello would be nice." "Hello. What the hell's going on?" "That's better. It seems you've become the town slut." "Excuse me?" "In the world according to Susan, you've been my side gig for the amount of time I've dated her." "I see. So I see your taking this rather well." "Actually I'm not." "So what about the other morning before she arrived?" "What about it?" "I'm sorry I brought it up. You obviously weren't there. I saw the look in your eyes and felt the heat of your breath. I guess I misunderstood,"she removed herself from the couch and calmly walked away. "So where is Tammy?"Nick inquired of Howie solemnly keeping his place on the couch."I could have sworn she was just here." "She was" "So where is she?" "She left." "Why?" "You mean you don't know?"trying to hide his dismay at her disappearance. He brushed what had happened that morning off as though it had meant nothing to him. He wasn't sure what was going on but he didn't want to lose whatever they had right now.
"Oh that silly little lie Susan's telling everybody. Come on man. You think I believe her for a minute. Remember, she tried to ruin me at one time and look where I ended up. I'm still happy. I won't deny it's a little rough to begin with but you'll make it. Tammy's not the kind of girl to stay mad for very long. She's got a thing for you bad." "Yeah, right." "It's written all over her face Howie. Her face lights up every time you enter a room or say "Hello". Tell me something, I've been seeing some of the same things in your face too." "It's ludicrous Nick. Me and Tam?"but he knew it was true. He was trying to deny his feelings for her and coming up short. "Stranger things have happened." "You are way too young to be this wise about this." "But it's true isn't it?"he looked him dead in the eye. "I can't say the thought hasn't crossed my mind recently." "If I were just a little older man. The things I could do to her,"he smiled; a slight blush creeping over his features. "So you like Tammy?"a little concerned somebody else besides himself had interest in her. "Yeah I do. You wouldn't mind if I asked her out would you?"
