Nick had been watching from across the VIP section with a "friend" of his."He's all yours sweetheart." "He's gonna be fun,"she commented and left Nick. She made her way toward the bar and sat in the vacant stool next to where he was now sitting looking distantly out over the bar. The endless sea of bodies writhing to the primitive rhythm mixed with sexually charged lyrics. That was all they really had. Sex. Maybe it was better he think of this now instead of three months down the road. If he could be replaced, then so could she. "I don't mean to barge in on your thoughts but I might be able to help you forget about whatever it is that's bothering you,"The nameless girl interrupted his thoughts. He turned at her voice. He assessed the situation. Risk everything he had or...What did he have anyway? The redhead sitting next to him was far more entertaining than Dianna had been tonight. "Maybe you can. Can I get you another drink...," He inquired; waiting for an answer. "Lynn." "Nice to meet you Lynn. I'm Howie." "Nice to meet you Howie and I believe I'll take you up on that drink." Dianna returned to find him liplocked with a woman she knew nothing of. So that must be it she thought. That's what was bothering him. Let him have his fun. They weren't really attached anyway right? Sure they had some good times. Her fists clenched in frustration. "You okay Di?" Ugh!Nick. She turned to him."Everything's just dandy Nick. Do you mind?" "Not at all and I don't think Howie does either." "Fuck off Nick! And if Howard comes up for air, let him know I've returned to the hotel k?" "You mean you're not staying to enjoy the festive environment?" "I'd love to but my boyfriend's hangin all over another woman so I don't particularly wanna sit and watch it all night." "Oh come on Di. I can remember a time when you liked that kinda stuff." "No you're the one that likes watching, not me. Now leave me the fuck alone,"she turned and left the club. Perfect. Everything was going the way he wanted. And she was right. He loved watching.
"Howie,"she muttered as they continued touching; their breath still mingling "Yes."His hand slipping under her white silk blouse. "I like this and all."Her voice raised as he found the hooks of her bra."You work fast." "I don't see the point in wasting any time." "Neither do I but maybe we should wait until we get back to your room." His room. Cold snap back to reality! He stopped immediately. Dianna! He shoulda known better than to listen to Nick. She'd probably gone back there herself after seeing this little public display. "Something wrong?" "I'm sorry Lynn but you can't come back to my room." "Then we'll go to mine." "Tempting but no." "You asshole!"Lynn stood and flung the drink at him."Nick was right about you." She started away but Howie grabbed her arm."What'd you say?" "Nothing. Now let go of me." "I heard the name Nick. Did he put you up to this?" "Yes. And he rewarded me generously in advance." "I'm sure he did. You wouldn't happen to know where he is would you?" "He didn't tell me what he was doing or where he was going, he just needed me to distract you." "Well you did your job so I'll let him know before I kill him,"he stated calmly before leaving her there.
999, 1000. She reached the pool's edge and rested on it. Fucking men. There had to be a better way to vent her frustration but the heated pool seemed to be the way right now. Who the fuck did he think was now? Was this some sort of payback for what happened with Nick? Dammit! She pushed off the light blue cement and took out her agressions on the serene waters once again. She could have emptied the pool between Nick and Howie tonight with her crushing strokes. She was never suspicious of any man before Nick came along and now Howie was placing doubt where his heart stood. I mean, sure he took her back when he shouldn't have but tonight. What was that? Was Nick behind that one too? She heard the splash at the opposite end of the pool and stood in the shallow end to get a clearer view of the body coming toward her. She lifted up onto the pool's edge and the body came into view. Shit! Nick. Just what I needed. "What are you doing here?"She spat. "It's a free country Di. " "I know it is." "Still pissed about the whole thing with Howie?"He stood in the shallow waters; the water rivuleting down his chest. There'd have been a time when she would have jumped him for that reason alone but he had to play it slow here. "Why do you care all of a sudden anyway? You seemed all too happy about his little faux paux there." "I didn't mean to be. " "Yeah right."She rolled her eyes. "Dianna. I know I treated you like dirt in the past but I'm trying something new here." "Oh you mean you're gonna actually try the human thing?"She snipped. Keeping his distance and shrugging her comment off , he responded," I'm trying to change Di. Couldn't you at least give me the benefit of the doubt here?" Stifling her laughter, she said,"Give me one good reason why I should." "Because you know what it's like." Well she did know how he felt. Her whole life she'd always been changing to please everybody else when she only needed to be taking care of number one and maybe, just maybe Nick was trying to become a better person. He had left them alone for three weeks. But a little voice inside her told her to be cautious."Look Nick, I'm all for people trying to better themselves but your timing is little to be desired considering the circumstances."
"I understand."He hung his head. Damn him! Why'd he always do that? She always felt sorry for him when he did that. Hung his head like a kid who got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. "Nick." "No it's okay."He turned and ducked backed into the pool. Jeez! She dipped back down into the pool more for the purpose of warmth than anything. He came back toward her and raised from the water once again."You're still here." "It's a free country right?" "If you say so." "Look Nick. You gotta admit your timing is a bit off here. I wanna trust you but you've given me so many reasons not to. Give me a reason I should." "I can't. I'm just asking you to."
