He stared emptily onto the long stretch of highway. They needed to talk. He didn't know why he kept dialing her cell. Was he fool enough to really believe she would answer after what he did to her? What was he gonna say if he got her on there anyway? Oh by the way, really sorry I fucked you and made you feel like a piece of trash. Yeah that would go over well but he couldn't just blurt out that he loved her either. Dianna stared out the window watching mile marker after mile marker pass by; ignoring the ringing of her phone. Nick asked a couple of times why she didn't answer it and gave up after she told him she was fighting with her Mom again and didn't wanna talk to her. He accepted her answer and left her to the ringing phone and picked up where he left off on his games. He'd gotten what he wanted from her today. He didn't need anymore. Why she was still putting up with it she didn't know. Oh yeah she did. Because she didn't want the conflict that would ensue once he found out that she didn't want to be his ornament anymore. And staying by his side meant that she would be around to see if Howie would redeem himself or continue to be the ass he was the night before. She so wanted the first and so far it looked like he was making the effort. She looked at the face of her cell and looked at the number. Maybe she should answer and tell him to fuck off as he had told her the night before. The only thing that would prove is she was just as bad as he was. The convoy of buses seemed to be pulling off the beaten path and into the nearest truck stop. As the buses pulled to a stop, she felt Nick's hands on her shoulders. "You comin?" Surprised he still noticed she was there today. Even more shocked that he was leaving the game he was so engrossed in."Um yeah. Lemme just slip my shoes on here,"she said. "So your Mom ever stop calling?" He was paying attention. She slipped the other white zip up sneaker on her foot and answered him."Finally. "
"Doesn't your Mom know she isn't gonna win this battle with you?" Foolish boy. She is gonna win."No but she's my Mom so I gotta let her at least have her battles. Let's go,"she said grabbing his hand and stuffing her tiny phone in the pocket of her khaki shorts. She had to at least pretend she was still catering to his every need. Even if she wasn't. They separated inside the truck stop and searched for the items they wanted. She was scanning the rack for her favorite candy bar when Howie's voice interrupted her search."Why haven't you answered my calls?" "That was you?"she replied nonchalantly. " You know damn well it was. We need to talk." "Give me one good reason why I should talk to you after the way you treated me last night,"she said; her voice well above it's average tone. She was still pissed and why shouldn't she be? He made her believe he cared and then objectified her. "That's why I need to talk to you. I want to apologize for that." "Apologize for treating me like a fucking rag doll?" "Dianna."His voiced steadied."Say we go somewhere a little more private and talk about this." "If you're worried about the boy genius, don't. He doesn't suspect a thing." "And how could he not with the way you looked this morning?" "I cleansed all the dirt away before he got on the bus and put on my best game face. With all his shit, I've learned how to do it." "Come on Di. Give me three minutes alone on my bus and then I won't ever bother you again." "Ever?" "Ever." She looked to see where Nick was. She looked over near the long line of cooler doors and saw his phone up against his ear as reached into the cooler to grab a bottle of soda. She put the candy bar back and said,"Let's go." She followed Howie back to the bus and he allowed her on first. She was reluctant to be allowed on first but maybe he still had some gentleman in him. She made her way up the large silver steps. Did she really think he was being polite? He just wanted to take a peek at that luscious ass of hers. He may have been in love with her but he couldn't ignore the fact that she was gorgeous. She knew it too. She just didn't flaunt it.
She turned around coming face to face with him again."Would it be possible not to run into you just once?" "Why? Don't you like it?" For as much as she hated him right now, her body was stirring in places she didn't want it to be. Damn him!"You know I can leave right now. We aren't on the road yet." "I know. I really am sorry about last night Dianna. The last thing I wanted to do was hurt you,"he softened. "Then why did you?"she said; distancing herself a few steps from him. "I just couldn't believe that maybe for the first time in a long time I had feelings that ran that deep for a woman. Especially you. I know I can't have you completely. You have Nick." "I have Nick?" "Well you have him around. I can't compete with that." Oh honey if you only knew how much more you have over him at this point in time. He may have been an ass to her last night but he seemed to be genuinely remorseful for his actions. What to do?"Howie. I don't have Nick. You know what he does to me and well he did it again last night." He took her hand."I'm so sorry." "Don't be. He's the one losing out but then there's you. You really haven't explained still why you did what you did to me last night." She wasn't gonna let him get past this question was she? Was he supposed to tell her right now that he loved her?" I don't know. Maybe I thought it'd be easier to push you away knowing the status of our relationship than to admit I felt something for you." Something? What was that shit? Gimme a break." What the fuck is it with you men these days? Is it so damn hard for you to admit you are in love with someone when you are? Excuse me but I'm getting off." "No you're not." "And why am I not?"She turned back to him. "Have you gotten so used to being on these things that you don't even know when they're moving?" She pushed the tiny curtain aside and sure enough they were on the road again."Dammit Howie!"She stood back up."Why didn't you tell me?" "Because you wouldn't have stayed." "And now you're gonna have a pissy woman on your bus for the next six hours. I hope you're happy." He smirked. "And don't think you're gettin away with anything here either because you're not my favorite person in the world right now. In fact, I pretty much think you're as much of a jackass as Nick is." "Then why'd you come on the bus with me?" "Maybe because I thought you had a shred of deceny in that body of yours but you don't give a shit either. Just as long as you get what you want." "Don't lump me in with every other man that's done you wrong Dianna. I brought you here to try and apologize for my actions."
