| 1922 They arrived at the Grey Goose Dinner Club that evening, Maria was in one vehicle with Leigh Anne and Howard followed in another. Leigh Anne looked at her. "Break his heart sweetie. I'll see you at eleven." "Right. See you later," she waved. She saw Howard in the next car and gave him a wink. "Anytime, "he winked back but she was already inside. She received a few admiring glances as she made her way through the club and over to the bar. She had been waiting over an hour when Howard approached her. "Any sign of him?" "Not yet." "Don't look now, but there's Romeo," Howard noticed him coming from the back of the establishment. She noticed him with a beautiful lady on each arm which he quickly dismissed each with a peck on the cheek once he noticed Maria standing by the bar. When she realized whom he was without the dark glasses, she nudged Howard. "Howard. This guy's father owns half of New York City. Scoot. We'll talk later." He left her after being dismissed from her presence. She stood where she was. She was observing the room when she heard his voice. "I see you like to play games Miss?" "Miss Evans." "No first name?" he ventured. "Until we get to know each other better, it's Miss Evans." "So we will be spending some more time together." "I just didn't want you to spend a lifetime waiting for that dance. Shall we?" "After you." They spent nearly a half an hour on the dance floor before he spoke. "So Miss Evans. What's a beautiful lady like yourself doing in New York City?" "I came here from Los Angeles to become a Broadway star." "And?" "I started out with an agent who wanted to chase me around his desk more than find me that starring role. Then I met sweet little Nick. Actually, I met his daddy first and he promised me he take me places. So far all I have to show is sweet little Nick and a lounge act three nights a week at his daddy's club." "So you're the one I've heard singing at the African Violet." "How have you done that?" "Because my father and his make deals sometimes but I was always too young to go into the club itself." "So tell me Alexander. What are your dreams?" "To find a nice girl like you, settle down with a nice girl like you," their lips slightly brushing, "but I'll probably end up like my father, married and chasing all the skirts around here." "Only if you let it happen." "Oh?" "Nick's dad is taking him away for the weekend to scour for college opportunities because he doesn't want the kid to grow up like him." Their lips met and slowly parted. "I think I should be going." "You sure?" She pushed him away. "Yes," she started away. "But I don't even.." "Maria," she made her way through the club. Howard followed her out, "are you okay?" "I'll be fine." "Do you want me to keep him away from you?" "I can handle but thanks for the offer. I'm kinda glad Nick brought you in after all." |
