2008 Sixth Grade Drug Awareness Survey

Survey:   anonymous, voluntary   

Sample:  147 sixth grade volunteers

Validity/Reliability:  measures not taken to account for reliability and validity

 

Survey Questions:

 

  1. What is the most abused drug in the U.S. ?
Answer:  Alcohol
96 out of 147 students or 65%  answered incorrectly
Implications:  Students failing to identify alcohol as a dangerous drug may be more at risk to experiment with alcohol at younger ages and engage in binge drinking behavior as teens.
Goal:  Have 100% of students identify alcohol as the most abused drug in the US .

 

 

  1. What drug is most abused by teenagers?
Answer:  Alcohol
74 out of 95 students or 50% answered incorrectly.
Implications:  Students failing to recognize the top three gateway drugs may minimize the potential harm of using drugs they do not consider “hard” drugs such as a alcohol and marijuana.
Goal:  Have 100% of students identify that alcohol is the most abused drug by teenagers.

 

  1. Which drug causes the most teenage death?
Answer:  Alcohol
112 out of 147 students or 76% answered incorrectly.
Implications:  Students failing to recognize the overdose potential of alcohol may put themselves at risk of overdose by engaging in binge drinking behavior. 
Goal:  Have 100% of students identify alcohol as being associated with the most teenage deaths.

 

  1. Which of the following contains the most alcohol? a.12-ounce can of beer;  b. cocktail with 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits;  c. 12-ounce wine cooler; d. all contain equal amounts of alcohol.
Answer:  d.
96 out of 147 students or 65% answered incorrectly.
Implications:  Students failing to recognize how to appropriately determine the amount of alcohol in various alcoholic beverages may be at risk of accidental alcohol overdose or driving while intoxicated when of driving age. 
Goal:  Have 100% of students recognize the amount of alcohol in various alcoholic beverages.

 

  1. True or False:  Teenagers who have not used alcohol and other drugs before their 20th birthday are less likely to develop a drinking problem or use illicit drugs.
Answer:  True
78 out of 147 students or 53% answered incorrectly.
Implications:  Students failing to recognize the potential risks of alcohol and other drug use during the adolescent developmental years may be subjected to various addiction and mental health related problems as adults.
Goal:  Have 100% of students recognize the potential risk of adult addiction if adolescents engage in alcohol and drug use.
