| Many Students To Ditch Thursday Class | ||||||
| Most students cannot wait for Spring Break to begin, for it is when many of us go to Lake Havasu, Las Vegas, or Mexico for a week of drinking and debauchery. April 5 marks the official start of Spring Break for CSULB, and this week is business as usual, except for Wednesday, which students have off for Cesar Chavez Day. | ||||||
| This Thursday is also a school day, but several students have planned to start their Spring Break early by taking this off, since many do not have school on Fridays as it is. What is the point of coming to school for one day when one is off both Wednesday and Friday? | ||||||
| "I think it's a personal choice and it is not something we can endorse," according to Armando Contreras, executive assistant to President Maxson. Many times when a holiday falls mid-week the university will recognize the holiday on Friday, when many students will not be here anyway. This time, however, "The reason it is on Wednesday is because the chancellor received a request that it be observed on the actual day. All the CSUs are under the request to not shift around that holiday," Contreras said. | ||||||
| Keith I. Polakoff, associate vice president for Academic Affairs, said that the final decision to come to class lies in the students' hands. "If they don't come to class on Thursday they do it at their own risk," Polakoff said. But what about the many teachers holding tests on Thursday or requesting assignments to be turned in, which essentially forces students to come on Thursday? "It's a lot easier to grade exam or term papers on a week that you're not in session," according to Polakoff. | ||||||
| Because many students will undoubtedly be absent from class on Thursday, it is a concern among some that the university will be losing money by keeping school open at all that day. As far as Contreras is concerned, though, the university wouldn't be saving much by closing campus. According to Contreras, the only time real savings are accomplished is "during Christmas and New Year's." Contreras noted that because "[CSULB] still have faculty here [on Thursday and Friday], there isn't much saving." | ||||||
| Senior journalism major Naseem Hashemian said that she is going to class because she "can't afford to miss it." Hashemian continued by saying that the teachers that have cancelled class on Thursday "are just trying to extend Spring Break so that they can leave early too." Hashemian said that she has only one class that has been cancelled. | ||||||
| Senior public relations major Kami Fischer said, "I guess it's cool for [some teachers to cancel class], it just sucks for the people who want to show up for class." Fischer later echoed Hashemian's statements and said that she, too, "cannot afford to miss class." | ||||||
