| Good Riddance To Gray Davis |
|

| October 7, 2003, will mark an historic event here in California, for it is the day that we will vote on the state's first-ever recall election to remove current Gov. Gray Davis from office.� Many students and teachers here on campus do not agree with this recall, while many, including myself, are 100 percent in support of it.� In addition, there are probably a number of people reading this that have not yet formulated an opinion.� Whatever the case may be, it is my hope that this article will shed some light on why you, the student, should care about this recall, and why, in fact, Gov. Davis should be recalled. |

| With the recall election less than a month away, it seems that every day Davis comes out with either a statement or a bill more preposterous and outrageous than the last.� On September 3, 2003, for example, the state Senate approved a bill that would allow over 2.2 million illegal immigrants to obtain valid California driver's licenses, a bill Davis is in full support of.� Does Davis not realize that granting illegal immigrants a license will not only give them valid identification, something they do not deserve in the first place because they are illegal immigrants, but also allow them to pack up and move to another state, obtaining a valid license there?� These immigrants, along with most of their employers, do not even pay taxes and Davis wants to issue them valid identification?� Unbelievable!� What about the potential terrorists that would be able to obtain licenses?�� William Booth, a staff writer of the Washington Post, notes that licenses would also allow illegal immigrants to "open bank accounts, cash checks, rent cars and hotel rooms and fly on airplanes."� Has Davis considered any of this?� It sure does not seem like it. |

| Another bill that would wreak more havoc on California and one that Davis is likely to sign involves universal health care, which at first may not seem too problematic to many of you.� Think again.� This proposal would require small businesses, which employ a whopping 79 percent of working-age people in California, to provide their employees with full health care coverage, something that most of these businesses simply cannot afford.� In anticipation of Davis signing this bill, many businesses are already planning on relocating to other states, which would deal California another severe blow to its already ailing economy.� It seems as though Davis is showing them the door. Furthermore, the California Labor Federation, a major sponsor of this bill, has a membership of 2.1 million people, a huge chunk of voters that Davis would like to keep on his side.� That's right, Davis, keep the union workers happy while jeopardizing 79 percent of state's jobs!� Brilliant plan. |

| In addition to all of this, Davis has made some pretty absurd comments as of late.� In one instance, the Fox News Channel caught Davis on a campaign stop in South El Monte remarking on Republican candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger's accent: "You shouldn't be governor unless you can pronounce the name of the state."� Can somebody say "childish"?� In another recent instance, we find Davis criticizing President Bush's economic policies, prompted by the president's weekly radio speech: "Republicans in power have refused to learn from their mistakes."� Oh come now, Mr. Davis, isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? |

| I hope that this small expos� has showed you at least a few of the reasons why our current governor, Gray Davis, needs to be recalled.� On October 7, 2003, I know where I will be: in the polling place voting for Schwarzenegger, and I hope you do the same.� It is about time that we say good riddance to Gray Davis. |
