CSULB Seeks To Accommodate All Tastes In Food And Entertainment
With each new semester at our humble university comes an influx of new students who are wet behind the ears as far as life at Cal State Long Beach goes. Some of the new students may be transfers from other universities across the nation, and some may be freshmen, but whatever the case may be, these students frequently wonder what there is to do on and around campus. Whether movies, music or plays are your thing, CSULB will surely be able to accommodate your entertainment needs.
The University Student Union - The hub of the campus, as far as student life is concerned, is probably the Union. Home to an arcade, a music listening lounge, a movie theater, and several restaurants, the Union is a fun place where you can go to study, kick back and relax, or just wait between classes. It is almost always bustling with life, and most of the clubs and student groups on campus meet there to do business and pleasure. The Union also houses a student-run radio station, a big-screen television (which seems to usually be featuring "Jerry Springer" and "Oprah") with comfortable chairs for students to sit on, and pool tables and a bowling alley.
Theatre Arts - The theater arts department at Cal State Long Beach always has a busy year, and the 2004-05 season is no different. Last semester audiences were treated to three totally different performances of three popular plays: "Cloud Nine," "Stand And Deliver," and "On The Verge." This semester, on the other hand, will contain two plays and a third which has not yet been mentioned.
"My Medea," the first of the three, is by local playwright and campus lecturer Susan Hansell, and is a hip retelling of the Greek tragedy "Euripides," "imbued with popular icons and events cut from the American landscape." The University Players will be performing "My Medea" March 14 - 19 at the Players Theatre.
The second play, "Migration," is by CSULB Theatre Arts Professor Lee Eisler, and "features minimal text, utilizing the expressive potential of bodies in a theatrical space to explore the struggles and the joys of immigrant refugees who seek asylum." This play, created specifically for the University Players, will be showing April 8 - 17 at the Players Theatre.
The final play, which has yet to be announced, will be shown April 29 - May 14.

Campus Dining - For the student who wants to find someplace to eat on campus, CSULB has a host of choices for you! Whether it is Chinese, Italian, Mexican, or American that you are craving, your taste buds will definitely be satisfied.
Starting on upper campus by the bookstore is The Nugget, a restaurant which serves meals, snacks, and brew, and is a favorite among many students. If you want to watch the game or just chill with some friends, The Nugget is the perfect choice for you. Adjacent to The Nugget is the main food court at CSULB, which has a Panda Express, a Taco Bell, a Krispy Kreme donut shop, and a variety of other establishments. Located in the University Student Union is the other food court, which features a Carl's Jr., an El Pollo Loco, and a Subway sandwich shop.
Concerts and Candy - Is there an event you want to go to that is off-campus? Maybe you'd like to go to Halloween Haunt at Knott's Berry Farm or get some tickets for Disneyland? Simply head on down to the Photo Ticket Center, which is located on the second floor of the Union, and pick up some discounted tickets! Also located at the ticket counter is a photo lab where you can develop your pictures, as well as a candy counter, where you can purchase anything from Skittles to Snickers to sour watermelon ties.
Off-Campus Attractions - Located within minutes of the CSULB campus are movies theaters, stores, clubs and more restaurants than you can shake a stick at, so for anybody itching to get off campus, you, too, are in luck.
Pine Street and Second Street both feature several attractions and serve as a hangout for many college kids. Pine Street is home to the brand-new club/concert venue the Vault, as well as several other clubs, hip restaurants, and an AMC movie theater. Second Street will probably appeal more to the shopper in you, but both are very accessible and are within minutes of the campus and dorms.
CSULB is also approximately 30-minutes away from Los Angeles (provided there is no traffic), and the entertainment and restaurant options available to students there are practically endless.
For more information on entertainment and food options there are around and on-campus, log on to www.CSULB.edu or call 985-4111 to reach campus information.
