The cemetery was established in 1804. Many famous people fill the tombs along its 118 acres of city-like streets and walkways.
Another two sharing a tomb are Croce-Spinelli and Sivel, pioneering French balloonists. On 15 April 1875 they died together in a ballooning accident more than 8,600 metres over France: the air grew too thin and they were asphyxiated. The scientific world was greatly shocked by this tragedy, which put an end to high altitude flights for the next 20 years. They were buried together in the tomb you can see here. The monument surmounting the tomb is one of the most talked-about in the cemetery, for a reason that should be fairly obvious.
An oddity is the monument, 43 metres tall, to Flix de Beaujour (1765-1836) a diplomat who, it is said, was much less impressive in life than his memorial indicates...
The famous include Frederic Chopin, Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein, Jim Morrison (yes, that Jim Morrison), Moliere, Sarah Bernhardt, Honore de Balzac, Eugene Delacroix, Marcel Proust, Isadora Duncan, Simone Signoret and Yves Montand, the last two in the same tomb.
