POSTERIOR PITUITARY

§    ANTIDIURETIC HORMONE

l    Deficiency:  Diabetes insipidus

l    Synthetic replacement therapy - desmopressin, vasopressin

§    OXYTOCIN

l    Induces labor contraction, induces prolactin

l    Drug therapy - labor induction, stops bleeding post labor

ANTERIOR PITUITARY

§    ADRENOCORTICOTROPIN HORMONE (ACTH)

l    Stimulates adrenal gland to produce adrenocorticosteroid hormones (cortisol, aldosterone)

l    Stopped by negative feedback

l    Drug used to diagnose Addison’s Disease

ANTERIOR PITUITARY

§    THYROID STIMULATING HORMONE

l    Stimulates thyroid gland to produce thyroxine

l    Stopped by negative feedback

l    Drug used to diagnose hypothyroidism

ANTERIOR PITUITARY

§    GROWTH HORMONE

l    Drug available to treat dwarfism

§    FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE

§    LUTEINIZING HORMONE

l    Drug available to treat endometriosis by stimulating progesterone production

§    PROLACTIN - no medication
