| Sampras is 29 - 0 in finals in which he won, at least, one tie-break. (which means he never won a tie-break in the finals which he lost - 0-17 tie-break record) Sampras never lost a Grand-Slam match in which he had a match-point. (unless it happend in his first ever Grand-Slam match - US.Open 88 vs. Yzaga 7:6 7:6 4:6 5:7 2:6) Between US.Open 88 (when Pete lost his first grand-slam 5-setter) and US.Open 97 (lost to Korda) , Sampras played 23 5-set matches in Slams, in which, he lost only 2 times: 1) US.Open 94 to Yzaga (when he was dead sick in the 5th set) 2) Roland Garros 95 to Schaller (a match that was spreaded equally over 2 days due to darkness and wasn't a classic 5-setter) * Actually, until his 2000 Roland-Garros loss to Philippoussis, he didn't lose a "real" 5-setter in which he was not injured. The 1997 loss to Korda was a match which started on the day session and ended in the night session due to a rain delay. His other loss was in the 1998 US.Open to Rafter, when he got injured. So between 1988 and 2000 Pete didn't lose a 5-setter unless he was injured (Yzaga, Rafter) or unless the match was not played in continuousness (Schaller, Korda). |
