Motorhead - 30th Anniversary Tour 2005, Glasgow Carling Academy, Scotland, 7/11/05, With Girlschool and In Flames. ------------------------------------ "We are Motorhead, and we play rock 'n' roll!" grunts Motorhead frontman/rock icon Lemmy Kilmister at the beginning of tonight's set. Judging by the sold-out crowd, crazed moshpits and extreme volume of band and crowd alike, they do it rather well too, and have been for thirty years now! First up tonight are the much overlooked Girlschool, who are probably best known for the tracks they recorded with Motorhead, some of which make it into tonight's set, including 'Emergency'. They're a pretty good band, and warm up tonight's crowd with glam rock singalongs like 'Race With The Devil' and 'Take It All The Way'. Secondly come Swedish thrashers In Flames. They have the motions, including the headbanging and air-punching, and they spark off a frenzy in the pit, but tonight's set begins to drag eventually. The highlight of their set is shout-along, 'Episode 666'. Then come the 'Head themselves. The lights dim, and when they come on again, Lemmy and co are on-stage. "Good evening Glasgow" says Lemmy's fag-fried voice, before the band kick into opener 'Dr. Rock'. Motorhead are famous for being THE loudest band on the planet, and they live up to their notorious reputation tonight, increasing the already ear-splitting volume with every song. The setlist tonight includes 'Killed By Death', 'Metropolis', 'Love Me Like A Reptile', 'Fast And Loose', 'Over The Top', 'R.A.M.O.N.E.S' (dedicated to the deceased 3/4 of that band), 'Sacrifice', acoustic blues grunt-along 'Whorehouse Blues', and what's that other one Motorhead do again? Ah yes, 'Ace Of Spades', the best heavy metal song ever recorded. There are some things missing from the set tonight, though, ones that should definitely be in there, including 'Bomber', 'Jailbait' and 'We Are The Road Crew'. However, the presence of Lemmy himself makes up for any missing gems tonight, and the crowd explodes one last time as strobe lights flash and the volume goes as high as possible without exploding our heads as they close tonight's show with the mighty 'Overkill'. A rainy, freezing cold Monday night in the middle of a rough area, and Motorhead can still sell it out; to quote Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke, "Winners never quit, and quitters never win." Tonight, Motorhead prove this. And they do so in a most excellent way. STONE DEAF FOREVER!
