Destination Dining: Tantris, Munich Address: Johann-Fichte-Str. 7, 80805, Munich, Bavaria, Germany. 089-3619590
This is one of the world's most beautiful restaurants, and one of its most unexpected. Housed in a squat, grey monolith in an otherwise inconsequential suburb of Munich, Tantris is recognised domestically as one of Germany's best restaurants - an assertion backed by its retention of two Michelin stars every year since 1974 – but travellers unaware of its reputation will firstly find the restaurant's interior most staggering. Secreted by the building's sombre concrete façade, the interior remains much the same as it was when inaugurated in 1971. Design connoisseurs will be completely delighted, and continually distracted, by the decadent setting, a time capsule which somehow manages to be both beautifully retro and enduringly stylish.
Behind its steely grey exterior, Tantris is a riot of colour. With walls a glossy lobster red and truffle black, orange carpets on the ceiling and an alignment of miniature saffron-robed monks standing sentry by the tables in the sunken dining room floor, it's entirely removed from the type of eatery that might be expected in this residential neighbourhood.
