Set in the year 2017, the complex story of Deus Ex takes place in a dystopian
Blade Runner-esque future where disease and pollution are rampant and shadowy
conspiracies litter the political landscape. The only way to stay ahead of
the competition is to invest in nanotechnology which will augment physical
abilities.
You play the role of J.C. Denton, one of the first nanoaugmented agents with
the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) team in New York. Waves
of ‘super plagues’ known as the Gray Death ravaged the world several
decades earlier, and just recently an enormous earthquake dumped Los Angeles
into the Pacific Ocean. The ensuing economic chaos bankrupted the country.
Trust
No One...
Some believe that the earthquake was an intentional act by a group trying
to destabilize the government; others think it could have been the result
of a nanotechnological experiment gone wrong. Your mission is to find out
the truth while keeping in mind that you can trust no one, not even your older
brother Paul, a UNATCO investigator.
Along the way you can increase your skills in 11 different categories by collecting
skill points. As in any good shooter, you also get opportunities to grab better
weapons and pick up power-ups, which in this case can augment your natural
abilities with nanotechnology.
There are 13 missions in the game, each with dozens of maps. You’ll explore locations such as New York City, New Orleans, the Taj Mahal, Paris, Tokyo, and even the infamous Area 51, a military base where the American government supposedly keeps UFOs which have crashed on our planet.
